THE ANIMAL GESTURE

Stiina Saaristo: “I use myself in my art. Analyzing my own feelings, shame, and painful experiences, I rework them into paintings. My images are self-portraits, painted and reanimated with the help of a mirror. They are also investigations of value and beauty prevailing in our society. My characters address issues of sex and equality by using black humour. My portrayal of women is grotesque. I am interested in the animality of human beings, in the way which they adopt behavioural patterns, gestures, and facial expressions characteristic of the animal world. I also rework the themes of shame and embarrassment that still accompany erotic fantasies and sexuality.”
