TANICHTHYS – White Cloud Mountain Minnow fish – facts info

Name and family:

Tanichthys Albonubes, Tanichthys Thacbaensis e Tanichthys Micagemmae, White cloud mountain minnow, comes from Cyprinidae family, naturally present in Vietnam and China.

Feature and behavior :

Tanichthys is a fresh and cold water fish and has a beveled muzzle with a slightly protruding mandible, no bearded, the dorsal fin is short as the anal, pectoral and pelvic fins. The color of the body is silvery green, with even golden areas, the dorsal and anal fins are green with a transparent border; the base of the caudal fin has a large round red spot. There are also other varieties of Tanichthys Albonubes that differ in colors, the livery or in the shape of the fins, for example there are specimens with veil fins, albino ones, and the gold variant. The 3 known species are Tanichthys Albonubes, Tanichthys Thacbaensis and Tanichthys Micagemmae. The Tanichthys Albonubes is the largest. The Tanichthys Micagemmae, however, has ventral fins and reddish anal. Its life expectancy, if well maintained is 5 to 10 years old, is a herringbone and must be raised to no less than 8-10 specimens, and tolerate low temperatures in nature, whereby they are sometimes bred outdoors, at least during the summer months, while in winter they must be kept at home.

Fishes’s coexistance:

The natural habitat of the Tanichthys Albonubes is represented by the small rivers of sandy and streamlined shallows, characterized by clear, shallow water, fresh temperature. The low water depth allows sunlight to form a thick water vegetation, but also covered and shady areas. The aquarium hosting the Tanichthys should be about 40 liters and long, the bottom should be composed of fine sand and dark color, vegetation along the tank walls and swimming space. This fish is very peaceful; it’s an ideal resident of a community aquarium, the species that can coexist are Macropodus Opercularis, Gambusie, Pethia Conchonius, Pethia Padamya, Puntius Semifasciolatus, Danio, Garra and Botia. The species to be avoided, of course, are predatory Cyclid. This kind of fish can be used in aquascaping layout, that are very cautious in the details as it will not modify the layout and will also form very beautiful aesthetical herd.

Sexual dimorphism and breeding:

The white cloud mountain fish is oviparous, the female releases the eggs that are fertilized by the male in open waters. Although the couple does not care for fry, aquarium reproduction is not difficult if the conditions are favorable. The hatching of eggs takes place in 2-3 days, the larvae absorb the calf sack and then begin to swim freely. The difference between males and females is noticeable by the fact that the first are slender and colored whereas the latter have a more rounded and often larger stomach.

Feeding and mantenance:

The Tanichthys is omnivorous and in nature is a micropredator, it feeds on small insects, worms, crustaceans and zooplankton. In the aquarium we can provide live or frozen food such as Chironomus, Daphnia, Artemia, or dry fodder suitable for the mouth size in the form of flakes or granules, whether vegetable or algae.
