A Look into Celebrity Closets

It recently came out that Harry Styles keeps his plethora of floral Gucci suits in a giant fridge. Actually, more specifically, Styles stores his clothes in a facility that is under twenty-four hour surveillance and enables the clothes to be watched through a feed on an iPad, all while being temperature controlled. Harry Styles has cryogenically frozen his clothes. As in Walt Disney’s head cryogenically frozen. He’s done so in order to preserve the clothing, some of which are costume designs including many of the Gucci suits he is know to wear as well as designs by Harris Reed who revealed all this information in an interview with British GQ. Reed stated, “"It's basically like a giant refrigerator — a frozen vault — somewhere in London where I am not going to disclose”. Reed chose to keep the locations of Styles’ closet secret, and for good reason, seeing as how Styles has likely accumulated the price of a decent Manhattan condo in silky floral shirts and jackets. Not a condo at the caliber of his own $8.7 million dollar one he occasionally frequents, spending more time in California, but still a decent condo.

While Styles’ choice of clothing storage veer far from the Ikea dressers many of our clothing call home, and is certainly more scientifically intricate than your typical walk-in closet (Cher Horowitz can eat her heart out), it is not necessarily outside of the realm of normal for many celebrities. Kylie Jenner released a video in which she toured some of her closets. According to an article by Harper's Bazaar, Jenner’s purse closet alone held a whopping $1.4 million in designer handbags including some collectors Hermès Birkin bags worth $28 and $33 thousand. While $1.4 million is a mere fraction of Jenner’s billion dollar net worth, for a majority of the world that is life-changing money, in purses. In Jenner’s video she also points out a mini pink Birkin that she plans to give to Stormie as her first bag, just to carry around essentials like Gerber Puffs and pacifiers. And this is just one of Jenner’s multitudes of closets, she also has a closet dedicated to her shoes and one solely to house workout clothes, both of which take up entire rooms.

Harry Styles’ iPad surveillance is put to shame by YouTuber Jeffree Star’s closet which is protected by an armed guard 24 hours a day according to a video Star posted to his YouTube account. Star’s closet is protected by a hot pink vault door made of 10,000 pounds of bulletproof stainless steel and features a fingerprint and retina scanner according to the Daily Mail. The reason for Star’s intensive security is the high ticket price on many of Star’s bags, shoes, and clothing items. In the vault is a Hermès Niloticus Crocodile Himalaya Birkin bag which is worth approximately $379,200. Star has two. The security on the rest of Star’s house is unknown.

In Reed’s interview he refers to Styles’ extravagant means of clothing storage as “so chic”. Chic is certainly one way to describe these celebrities’ closets. Another way is excessive, unnecessary, and a gross misapplication of funds, but chic works. If celebrities wish to have closets that exceed the wealth of some countries, there’s not much the rest of us can do to stop them. Except hope Styles runs his giant walk-in freezer off of solar energy.
