Before I forget, a session update:

They discovered a bunch of kunnoichi, who tried to convince them to just stay... until a fight broke out. I can't even remember who started it, but I can tell you who finished it. The party won with barely a scratch, and captured all of the unconscious kunnoichi - there was one awake one, who surrendered.

With Nasturtium holding them all in her vines, they gave up their (little) information, so the party wandered into a very messy room with treasure and stuff lying everywhere - a real mess, I tell you. Junk all over the place. So they looted it good and proper, gaining a bunch of talismans and fighting over them, as well as stealing all the Hell that was there. Which cured the patient of OCD.

After that, they headed back out, ending up quite cramped, and were thanked by a much cured Elkford. In the next episode, the party apparently get to attend... a wedding! And there will be a proper tea party and everything! Rumour has it there will be more talking and interaction this time around. Shock!

Hobbes announced he was going to kill them because they seemed awfully scared of heights and he was bored, but the Kunoichi were the ones who actually pulled out weapons and attacked. There was also the ghost.

Oh, that's right. The final exit portal had a gate guardian: a Ghost (the Disgaeagame type, obviously) Knight. At least I think he was a Knight. You know what my memory is like. They killed it good and proper.

The ghost was laughing for some reason before we attacked, if I recall correctly. And the final blow on him was a well-aimed Firebolt. Also, I can't help but try and imagine what a Disgaea-style wedding is going to be like.

My sleep schedule has been insane lately. For reasons quite unknown to me, I slept sixteen hours last weekend. I may or may not be awake enough to play at all today. I'll try, but if I don't show up or suddenly stop responding, it's probably because I fell asleep at the keyboard.

Well, it was a short session due to me starting late and players suffering fatigue, but things happened! They walked, they talked, and they discovered things.

They were introduced to a new character, Barzini, by their host, Andromarius - a Marionette. He held a tea party for them, but they were the only ones there. While they stole everything, even the napkins, he explained how there was a wedding the next day, except it was likely called off because nobody was talking to each other - also the reason nobody else attended.

They found out that apparently the problem is the mother of the groom said disparaging things about the bride, and the bride hit her for over a million damage in retaliation. But they only have the word of Patiki, who herself used to be betrothed to the groom.

So the party went to investigate, after stealing the sabrekitty butler, and spoke to Patiki, who is a Nekomata. She explained how the groom's mother said the bride was an underweight girly-girl who doesn't wear combat boots (bride and groom are both ogre demons), and she went and told the bride. They sensed her motive and knew she was a lying liar who lied.

And that's where we called it.

Also, the butler and the ninjas will be negotiating contracts with the party, through the union reps Barry and Rodders.

Which I think I'm interpreting correctly in that it's no penalties whatsoever so long as the offhand weapon is light,

Then again, the IRC thing I use forces me to make a new ID every time I put it on, no matter how many times I click "Save". Okay, so I have a potential future rules question. Or set of questions really. About what's going to likely be of pretty minor import, but it exposes some uncertainties in the Tome ruleset and may come up in other games, so bear with me as I go full nerd here:

Assuming that my character in the game lasts long enough, I will at some point be gaining at least the first level of the Storm Blade PrC.

Which leads to the combination of these two abilities:

Cold Magic (Ex): All Cold spells are considered spells known for the purposes of magic item activation.

Poetry (Ex): the Storm Blade, being a samurai, is automatically skilled with poetry. He adds his class level to all Perform (Poetry) checks. He may also Scribe Scrolls – he doesn't have to know the spells, but can only scribe scrolls with a Spell Level equal to or less than half his Class Level (round up).

So a Storm Blade 1+ can scribe a scroll of any first level spell.

Then a Snowscaper 1+ can treat any scrolls of [Cold] spells as being a spell known. In Core, 1st level [Cold] spells are pretty much Ray of Frost as not even Chill Touch gets tagged with the keyword, but there are a couple good ones available from It's Cold Outside and similar dumpster diving. ( Really odd rule distinction: Summon Monster is a [fire] spell when used to summon a [fire] critter, but is *not* a [cold] spell when used to summon a [cold] creature :urr: )

However, these abilities do not quite do what one would think they do from a casual reading, mainly because Scroll activation is stupidly complex.

As per the The SRD section on scrolls, there are a number of steps to scroll activation.

First up is deciphering., and oddly it appears that even the scroll's scriber must still decipher it before casting. But that can be done beforeheand, and taking 20 is allowed on that spellcraft check, so it's really just a roundabout way of saying "you require a spellcraft bonus at least equal to the level of the spell you are deciphering "

Then "the spell must be of the correct type (arcane or divine)". Huh what? Firstly, how's that even work in tome/Disgaeaverse with White Mages being arcane healing casters and Element Mages being Warlock-esque (Su)-flingers, etc? Secondly, does the Storm Blade Poetry ability scribe scrolls as arcane, or divine, or Storm Blade's choice, or both at once or something else? My vote is to ditch the whole arcane/divine distinction as regards scrolls in the name of simplicity - I mean wands don't care who made them from which spell list, so why should scrolls? But I could be biased as that is the most generous to PCs interpretation.

Next up, the user must have the spell on his or her class list. Snowscapers don't actually get a spell list, but Cold Magic lets them meet this requirement for all [Cold] spells. So this one is easy.

Next step "The user must have the requisite ability score." On one hand, this is obvious and on the other hand it gets wonky in Tome-based games. Obviously a Storm Blade / Snowscaper should be able to use her own primary stat for casting spells from scrolls she herself scribed. but without the strict arcane / divine int/wis divide and with MAD casting classes like White Mage or alternate option casting classes like Koumei's Witch around, how's that work when the Storm Blade scribes a scroll and hands it to someone else? Is it based on the caster stat of the scriber? Does the Storm Blade choose which stat it's based on at time of scribing? Does it automatically use the primary caster stat of the reader (as it would if the reader was casting from his own spell list)? That last one gets my vote, as simplest, but against it's also the best option for PCs, so I could be biased.

Confused yet? Baffled why scroll activation is so contrived? Well if not, there's still more.

If the user meets all the requirements noted above, and her caster level is at least equal to the spell’s caster level, she can automatically activate the spell without a check. If she meets all three requirements but her own caster level is lower than the scroll spell’s caster level, then she has to make a caster level check (DC = scroll’s caster level + 1) to cast the spell successfully.

So, what's the default caster level on non-spell list mages like Snowscaper and Fire Mage? What's the caster level on scrolls scribed via Storm Blade Poetry?

Fortunately the common case is easy, as in the case of a snowscaper/storm blade scribing a scroll via Poetry and then using Cold Magic to activate it, we can let the caster level be an unknown N at the time she scribes the scroll. Since her caster level is still an unknown N when she rolls to activate the scroll, she gets to roll 1d20+N against a DC of N+1, meaning she cannot fail (unless she accumulated negative levels between scribing and activation or something). However, knowing the caster levels becomes meaningful in cases where the scrolls are given to other characters or when a Snowscaper tries to activate a scroll scribed by someone else - so we still need numbers.

Personally, I am a big fan of making caster level == character level as much as possible, but there are times when that's too good and it should merely be class level.

Okay, that's all the technical stuff, but it leaves one more big question: How does Scribing Scrolls even work in a game where neither GP nor XP are tracked with any degree of precision ?

It could just be "turn downtime into expendable items until you get bored with it and/or hit the wish economy anyways", but my inclination would be to handle it as a resource pool along the lines of "you can have up to a number of scrolls equal to your character level (or Caster Stat Modifier, or something else) prepared at the start of each adventure . You may carry them yourself or share them amongst your allies." Possibly throwing that on top of crafting downtime requirement, so that each scroll takes a day of downtime to rescribe, or possibly just assuming they all replenish between adventures.

As regards this game, I'm pretty much content to just pocket the additional Cha add to melee damage and swift action attack from Storm Blade 1 and ignore the whole Poetry thing. I mean adding 1d6+ Cha + Cha on top of Comabat School and Subtle Cut to each of 4 attacks plus iteratives and AoOs is already scary good on a max-Cha character.

However, barring a clarification in a finalized Book of Gears, some of the Scroll issues are going to come up in other games where people play Snowscapers, Fire Mages, or Green Mages, so it's worth discussing in context of the Tome ruleset.

It works exactly the way it does with, say, protection from evil. This isn't new to Tome/Disgaeaverse; a lot of (Healing) spells are on the Bard list, and Dragons and Naga can cast arcane spells off the cleric list.

A spell is not arcane or divine until it is cast. A spell that's only on the Cleric list is just that; it's only on the cleric list. When the spell is cast by a Cleric, that specific instance of the spell is divine. If a new arcane caster class was written that had that spell, or a new monster or class was written that had the spell as a spell-like ability, then the spell as cast by either of those would end up arcane.

A scroll is a type of magic item which is explicitly, itself, either arcane or divine, and the resulting spell is the same type as the scroll. That quality is determined (typically) by the source of the spell used to craft the scroll. A spell scribed with the help of a cleric casting cure light wounds is a divine scroll of cure light wounds. A spell scribed with the help of a Bard, Dragon, Naga, or White Mage casting cure light wounds is an arcane scroll of cure light wounds. A Cleric could cast the former but not the latter, a White Mage or Bard could cast the latter but not the former, and a multiclassed White Mage/Cleric or UMDer could cast either one.

Correction mine. I'd personally presume that since they use a bunch of SLAs, which are arcane, they use arcane scrolls. Clarification in the class ability is desirable, especially since this is an individual interpretation.

Secondly, does the Storm Blade Poetry ability scribe scrolls as arcane, or divine, or Storm Blade's choice, or both at once or something else? My vote is to ditch the whole arcane/divine distinction as regards scrolls in the name of simplicity - I mean wands don't care who made them from which spell list, so why should scrolls? But I could be biased as that is the most generous to PCs interpretation.

They don't have the actual spell that they're dropping in the scroll, so it depends on which spell they pretend they have, which could be either. There are no divine casters in the party, or the standard Disgaea class list, so you can just decide here and now that all your personally scribed scrolls are arcane.

Next step "The user must have the requisite ability score."

The relevant text is actually in UMD: "To cast a spell from a scroll, you need a high score in the appropriate ability (Intelligence for wizard spells, Wisdom for divine spells, or Charisma for sorcerer or bard spells)".

So with a Snowscaper 1+/X X/Storm Blade 1+ scribing and then casting a [Cold] spell from a scroll, (1) the character scribes the scroll, specifying which spell, which caster level (up to Storm Blade levels), and which of arcane or divine the scroll is. (2) The character casts from the scroll. They first decipher it with Spellcraft, then check their Intelligence or Charisma (probably the latter, since it's their choice) against the scroll.

The only question left I see is whether the class is part of the scroll (i.e. decided at time of scribing), or whether the scroll-caster just chooses one who has that spell accessible at that caster level when they activate the scroll. I'm inclined toward the former Edit: latter since it's the most literal interpretation I see (flaming sphere is a wizard spell, and also a sorcerer spell, and also a druid spell) and also advantageous to players, and also easier to adjudicate for casting spells that are on your spell list (just cast them with whatever attribute you usually do).

For this game we can just pretend all the scrolls you make are for White Mage or Sorcerer unless you specifically want to give Kuniko a bunch of Fire Wizard scrolls.

So, what's the default caster level on non-spell list mages like Snowscaper and Fire Mage? What's the caster level on scrolls scribed via Storm Blade Poetry?

For potions, scrolls, and wands, the creator can set the caster level of an item at any number high enough to cast the stored spell and not higher than her own caster level.

A spell’s power often depends on its caster level, which for most spellcasting characters is equal to your class level in the class you’re using to cast the spell.

You can cast a spell at a lower caster level than normal, but the caster level you choose must be high enough for you to cast the spell in question, and all level-dependent features must be based on the same caster level.

So unless specified otherwise, Storm Blade and Snowscaper both use their class level as caster level. The Storm Blade must create scrolls at a caster level where the purely hypothetical supplier of the spell could cast it (a wizard, cleric, bard, etc.). Clarification in both cases would be appropriate.
