Cynotilapia afra – Chewere

Cynotilapia afra – Chewere is a beautifully colored cichlid from Lake Malawi, which mainly feeds on plankton.

Cynotilapia afra – Chewere

Cynothilapia afra chewere comes from the neighborhood of Chewere in the northwest of Lake Malawi. This species feeds on 2 different ways. The territorial males look for a dark cave between a few large rocks and stay close by. Here they feed on the small animals between the aufwuchs and plankton near their territory. The females, however, are not territorial and form large schools that are looking for plankton in the transition zone. They stay reasonably close to rocks to be able to take cover if necessary.

The Aquarium

In the aquarium Cynotilapia afra chewere feels best with many rocks. Males built a territory between the rocks and the female can hide from the male’s attention. A ratio of 1 male to 2 or 3 females works best, the male can then divide his attention between the females present.
