I have nothing against trends.

There is an interest to recognize the existence of trends, and understand their origins.

From time to time I like to examine, the hottest trends in architecture.

In this post I will examine  the “Origami Envelopes trend”

For more information about the “Origami Envelopes trend”, you are invited to visit my post: Preston Scott Cohen and the “Origami Envelopes trend”

What are the inspiration Sources for the “Origami Envelopes trend”?

I can think about three sources of inspiration for the “Origami Envelopes trend”.

1.The origami traditional Japanese art.

2.Peter Eisenman’s  Max Reinhardts Haus project. from 1992.

3.Preston Scott Cohen’s Tel Aviv Museum –  2003-2010.

Each one of them has a different role in generating the “Origami Envelopes trend”.

Here is a very short video that my youngest son photographed, my daughter edited and the eldest son chose the background music, documenting , the preparation process of a sketch.

They called it “ Sketch is born

Inspiration” or “Copy Paste” are the most dominant phenomenon of the 21st century among architects.

Most likely the “availability of information” enables the existence of the phenomenon.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all…. I present it every week in my blog, accompanied by my explanation sketches, we saw more than once, the differences between “Conscious Inspiration” and “copy paste” are not so big….

And that is exactly what I clarify in my blog.

I believe that the natural development of architecture design is based on inspiration techniques ….I call them “Codex Rules”.

I strive to develop a method.

A method that will help architects and designers to cope with this phenomenon, At this point in time, I call it the “Conscious Inspiration Method” ….

With the methodology of “conscious Inspiration”, we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings.  Once we develop our tools =“Codex Rules”, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

The Conscious Inspiration Method‘ ,  How it Works?

First step: “knowledge”, as many said and wrote before; knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis.

Second step:   develop your personal Conscious Inspiration tools=“Codex Rules”.

Third step: the inspiration Source. (Don’t be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings).

Step Four: realize your design idea (your invention).

The five “HOWS” of the “Conscious Inspiration Method

1. How to filter out relevant Knowledge from the Web with abundance of information?

2. How to develop your own Vision?

3. How to choose the right “Inspiration Sources” that empowers your Vision?

4. How to develop your personal Design tools?

5. How to use your Inspiration Sources as the “Planning Process Generator”, and design high quality and creative architecture?

Trends…. I’m not saying I have a problem with them….

From Eliinbar’s Sketch book 2012– Trends…. I’m not saying I have a problem with them….

I was taught at the School of Architecture….Architects have  special responsibility….Our mistakes remain even after we will not  longer be here ….

See what gave rise, from a 10 minutes visit to one of the numerous internet architecture magazines….Designboom

All of the following projects represent an architectural trend ,shown in my previous posts ….

What did I learn from this post?….

Architectural trends were always been recognized…….. There is nothing new under the sun….

The Network effect changed dramatically the availability of architects inspiration sources

Architectural trends today are characterized by quotations….Personal expression and creativity, get a small place

I’m not saying I have a problem with this…. on the contrary….

I think we should institutionalize a method that helps young architects get inspired consciously from existing buildings…”it will lead us architects and designers to high quality and creative architecture”.

I direct The “Conscious Inspiration Method” to be oriented to deal with this challenge.

What do you think?

“Conscious Inspiration” the ultimate inspiration methodology:

I invite you all to contribute in developing the attitude and tools towards the viability of the “Conscious Inspiration” Method.

The abundance of information in the Web affects us all, as I illustrate in my posts.

I believe that designing is a process formed from three main phases:knowledgetools and invention.

Knowledge”: as many said, and wrote before – Knowledge is the foundation for all designing process. We architects and designers are obliged to be informed about everything that was designed in the past and on a daily basis….

Tools”: develop tools to analyze buildings and “Understand” them, tools that will cope with the abundance of architectural information…tools that encourage your planning process….tools matching your skills and generating your creative process….

(You are invited to visit earlier posts of mine showing leading architects tools…. )

Invention”: with the methodology of “conscious Inspiration” , we don’t need to be intimidated to get inspired from relevant buildings. Once we develop our tools, it will lead us to high quality and creative architecture.

The construction of the new wing of the Tel Aviv Museum is finished.

I’m pleased to announce….Tel Aviv leads one of the hottest trends in architecture today….The “Origami Envelopes trend”.

Preston Scott Cohen Architect

Tel Aviv Museum

2003-2010

I am aware of Preston Scott Cohen’s unique architectural geometry approach, that gave rise to the “Origami envelopes trend” ….

Origami Swan

Notice the formal similarity between the Tel Aviv museum and the origami swan

1. Both were created from the practice of geometry.

2. Both “facades” are characterized by sharp lines.

3. Both are characterized by a shell composed of numerous straight surfaces.

4. It seems that the shell has also a constructive role (Actually in the museum a steel construction was covered by precast concrete slabs)

This blog focuses on the “sources of inspiration” of architects,

We are aware of the enormous architectural information we are exposed to in the web.

And as we found out…. it has big influence on us ….

Here is a partial selection of buildings  infected  from the “Origami Envelopes trend”.

SANAA – Inspired by a hole in a facade?

Posted in buildings, public buildings with tags , , , , , on December 7, 2010 by eliinbar

Preston Scott Cohen is a Boston based designer and the Gerald M. McCue Professor in Architecture at Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD).

He is the winner of the Herta and Paul Amir Competition  ( 2004 )  to design a new building for the Tel Aviv Museum of Art  and  the winner of the competition to built  the Taiyuan Museum of Art .

 Preston Scott Cohen Architect

 Goodman-house

Pine Plains, NY , USA  2001-2004

SANAA (Sejima and Nishizawa and Associates) is an architectural firm based in Tokyo. It was founded in 1995 by Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa. In 2010, Sejima and Nishizawa were awarded the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s highest honor.

SANAA Architects

Zollverein School of Management & Design

Essen ,Germany 2003-2006

The Zollverein School of Management & Design, inaugurated on July 31, 2006, is the first new building on the historical coal-mining Zollverein site; declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001.

SANAA on the Zollverein School:

1.“Our aim was to achieve transparency in the concrete structure.”
2.“We have made many big openings in the facades to create different daylight situations inside the building. The position of the windows are defined by the interior programs. By varying the ceiling heights each floor has a very different atmosphere.”

Preston Scott Cohen on the Goodman House:

A curtain wall with irregularity distributed windows wraps the peripheral steel frame. It is if nostalgia caused the emergence of a modernist paradigm of construction more fitting to a commercial building than to a house

Is this another example of “Conscious Inspiration”?
