"Bijin-ga"
is a term or translation used for pictures of beautiful women found
in ukiyo-e and woodblock prints in Japanese art of the Edo period. Revealed
in the paintings are period insights into true feminine and inner beauty
of the era.
The paintings shown were adapted from photos of the original
prints, customized, colorized and hand painted on ceramic tiles.
Kikugawa Eizan: "Beauty In The Snow". High-class courtesan arriving at
a wintry boat landing and anchor. Adapted from the series Snow Moon and
Flower in Celebrated Places (Furyu Meisho Setsugekka). Circa late 1800’s.
Custom designed and hand painted on single ceramic tile, 8 inches wide x
10 inches high.
Kitagawa Utamaro: "Hour of the Serpent". Beautiful
young woman (courtesan) after her morning bath with her “kamuro” kneeling
beside her offering tea. The time of day is during the hour of the serpent,
9AM -11AM.

Okumura Masanobu: "Beauty After the Bath".
Rooster is captivated and mesmerized by beautiful woman just out of the
bath on a warm summer day, circa 1750.

Ishikawa Toyonobu:
"Tying Love Poem on Cherry Tree". Lovely young maiden tying billet-doux
to a blossoming cherry tree. Adapted from the piece by Toyonobu which was
in the Urushi-e (lacquer picture-hand colored in a variety of tints) method
of the time, circa 1741.
