Kyra Gracie Fight List

Kyra’s grappling achievements are as follows:

  • 4x BJJ World Champion (2006, 2008, 2010) (2008 Absolute)
  • 5x BJJ Pan American Games Champion (2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007)
  • 5x BJJ Brazilian Champion (1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004)

  • 3x ADCC (Abu Dhabi Combat Club) Submission Wrestling World Champion (2005, 2007, 2011)
  • 1x BJJ Asiatic Champion (2006)

Kyra began practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as a toddler, but more so in a fun and light manner. By the time she turned 11 she changed her approach to training and started taking regular classes. She began her competitive career when she reached her yellow belt. In the beginning her family was fully invested in her competitive goals, but as she progressed in the ranks their views began to change.

As she reached her blue belt in her teens, her family's conservative views such as the roughness of the sport compelled the men in her family to try and convince her to back away from the game. She obviously did not listen to this advice and continued to push forward and dedicate her life to Jiu Jitsu. She more than proved that she was just as tough as any other Gracie.

In 2005 Kyra spent much time training with Alexandre Soca but she decided to move her training to the Gracie Barra headquarters so she could be closer to her uncle, Carlos Gracie Junior. By the time Kyra turned 21 she was awarded her black belt by Carlos Gracie Junior. Around this time Kyra had decided to enroll in college to pursue a law degree. She left school after 1 year to pursue a full time venture into competing and teaching Jiu Jitsu.

By the time 2009 rolled around Kyra decided to begin boxing classes with famous coach Claudio Coelho in Brazil. She was hinting at possibly kicking off an MMA career, and she also trained judo with Leonardo Leite who was an Olympic judo team member.

Due to a combination of factors such as her personality, competitive record, and looks, Kyra became one of the most recognized athletes in Jiu Jitsu. She was regularly appearing in prime time TV shows in both Brazil and the USA, and was eventually offered work as an actor.

Kyra retired from Jiu Jitsu competition in 2014 and has devoted most of her time to coaching. Shortly before her Jiu Jitsu retirement as well as in more recent times she has talked about a possible MMA venture. Her family member and UFC Hall of Famer Royce Gracie was interviewed about this in 2013.

In the interview he spoke about her toughness and skill when it came to Jiu Jitsu for MMA. When asked to compare her to UFC Bantamweight Champion Ronda Rousey, he expressed tons of confidence in the odds of Kyra. He stated that Kyra has had many more submissions and was much more used to competition than Ronda, and that Ronda knows what she is doing but Kyra is better whether it is gi, no-gi, or MMA.

The only reference point at that time for Kyra facing an MMA opponent was her match against top 10 UFC women’s bantamweight Alexis Davis. She and Kyra competed against one another at the World Jiu Jitsu Expo in 2012, and Kyra won the match by points. When it comes to MMA insight, whether there is some bias or not Royce definitely has the experience to talk the talk.

Kyra was considered to be one of the best Jiu Jitsu practitioners in the world during her early 20’s, and etched her legacy into stone with some of her biggest victories such as the World Jiu Jitsu Championships, Pan American Jiu Jitsu Championships, and ADCC victories. Kyra also played other important roles in the sport, being one of the most televised practitioners and making appearances on famous Brazilian TV shows such as Programa do Jo and Sensei SporTv. Whether she ever decides to compete in Jiu Jitsu again or fight MMA, the value of her contribution to the sport will always be remembered.

Kyra Gracie’s Best Match Of All Time

Kyra Gracie’s best match of all time is widely considered to be the match that won her the gold medal in the 2006 IBJJF World Championships at black belt. Kyra had won numerous high profile titles up to this point, but her first IBJJF gold medal is what really set her on the world's stage and was a huge milestone in her career.
