Life is Like a Circus Tent

Life is like a circus tent: without enough strong and supportive cables, your tent could blow away. Your goals may not be achieved, your health may suffer, and relationships may be challenged.

~Alicia Connor

September is here and the weather will soon be changing. As the seasons change, so do our lives. Calendars and schedules can get hectic; how do we remind ourselves to stay grounded? Days pass to weeks and it can be easy to lose sight of the important things. A reflection on what is important helps keep us focused on how we want to live our life. Life is like a circus tent: without enough strong and supportive cables, your tent could blow away. Your goals may not be achieved, your health may suffer, and relationships may be challenged.

So how do we attach more cables to our tents to feel grounded and secure? A routine that provides support and comfort helps us meet our daily needs and show up to life as we wish. When things get hard, it is easy to let go of healthy habits we have formed for ourselves, such as exercise or eating regularly.  A simple daily routine keeps our momentum moving forward, even on the days you feel like you’re faking it.

As fall approaches and this year comes to an end, it is important to reflect on what supports your day, values, goals, and life. Think about what is working in your favor, keeping you healthy, happy, and mentally clear. Keep the routine that works for you and adjust it as needed to make room for growth and new opportunities.

To ensure all parts of your life are working together, consider these elements:

Hobbies– Learn something new, teach someone else a skill

Home– Free clutter to free your mind

Self love– We are all in a long-term relationship with ourselves as performed by Whitney Houston: “I found the greatest love of all / Inside of me / The greatest love of all / Is easy to achieve / Learning to love yourself / It is the greatest love of all”

Relationships– Reach out to people that support you and bring you joy

Spiritual–  Practice gratitude, spend quality time on what you want out of life

Goals– Include habits that  you will gain from, like creating an action plan

Work– What could you do at work that simplifies your day?

Finances– Reflect on and assess if there are any out-of-the-box strategies to bring in income.

Health/Exercise– With or without a friend, with or without equipment or gym, pick an activity that suits you physically and emotionally

Diet-Hydration– Getting at least 64 oz. of non-calorie liquids a day will help with your energy and focus.

Mindfulness (stress response)– We have control over our response in life even when we don’t have control over a situation or circumstance.

Socializing– Being active in your community and creating meaningful connections

Recognizing emotions– Bottling up emotions will delay your response. Take some time to recognize the emotions you’re experiencing and embrace them, even the painful ones. Releasing emotions will keep you in a better mental state.

The show must go on!

There will be hiccups and heartache along the way. Staying true to yourself is a form of self love and growth. The best way to get through life is to expect the unexpected, take care of all aspects of your life, grow and prosper.

Alicia Connor is a registered dietitian nutritionist and chef who is passionate about encouraging lifestyle shifts with a focus on meal planning and simplifying healthy eating.
