FORMER TIGER LANNY MCDONALD NAMED INDUCTEE TO ALBERTA HOCKEY HALL OF FAME
Medicine Hat, AB — Hockey Alberta and the Hockey Alberta Foundation announced on Tuesday the 2015 inductees to the Alberta Hockey Hall of Fame. Included in the 5 inductees is former Tiger and NHL great Lanny McDonald.
McDonald had a great career as a Tiger before moving onto the NHL. The Hanna, Alberta native was drafted in 1973 by the Toronto Maple Leafs 4th overall after recording a 139 point season with the Tabbies that year, leading Medicine Hat to its first ever league championship. In his time with the Tigers McDonald played in 138 games, recording an astonishing 253 points, including 112 goals over 2 seasons.
McDonald is the only ever Tigers player to have his number retired by the club, his number 8 hangs in the rafters of the Medicine Hat Arena.
McDonald’s NHL career spanned more than 1,100 games, during which he scored 500 goals and 506 assists, including 66 goals in 1982-83 for the Flames. McDonald was drafted fourth overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1973, and tallied three consecutive 40-goal seasons in Toronto. He was traded to Colorado Rockies in 1979, and then to Calgary in 1981 where he spent the remainder of his career.
McDonald represented Canada internationally twice as a player, in the 1976 and 1979 Canada Cup events, and in 2004 was director of player personnel of Canada’s world championship team. In addition to being a member of the HHOF and now a member of its selection committee, he was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1993, and was the first member of the Calgary Flames to have his number retired, in 1990.
The Medicine Hat Tigers congratulate Lanny for all of his accomplishments as a Tiger and during his time in the NHL. It is a great honor to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and we continue to wish Lanny and his family great success.
