Food and feeding
Empire gudgeons are not fussy eaters so provide then with a quality flake or pellets but this needs to be varied with regular meals of live or frozen foods. They will accept blood worms, daphnia, brine shrimp and mysis.
Origin
Oceania; Empire gudgeons are found in the estuaries of Australia.
Sexing
The male will display red finnage, with the females the fins are a more browner colour.
Breeding
The male will intensify in colour when spawning is about to commence and when ready the female will deposit her eggs on rocks, plants or even the tank glass. The male will take on the parental role and protect the eggs until they hatch in about 10 days. The fry, once free swimming can be fed on Infusoria.
Lifespan
The expected lifespan for Hypseleotris compressa is 5-8 years.
Short description
Hypseleotris compressa do best in a brackish set up although some keepers claim to have kept them for years in fresh water. They will require hiding places added to the tank and use plants that can withstand the brackish water.
