Tervo Highway Strip / Tervon varalaskupaikka
The highway to the danger zone: located in the middle of the boreal forest on otherwise unremarkable Regional Road 551 near the small town of Tervo in Finland's Northern Savonia region, Tervo Highway Strip (with the completely fictional ICAO code XPTERVO) is one of many highway bases scattered across the Finnish countryside. Although officially they double as emergency landing sites for civilian aircraft, no such emergency requiring a highway landing has ever occurred near one of these sites, so the possibility remains strictly theoretical. Instead, these sites host the air force's annual exercises, where the Finnish Air Force's F/A-18 Hornets operate from these improvised, bare-bones airbases.
As announced in the Air Force's recent press release, this year's BAANA23 exercise is to take place at Tervo Highway Strip, and has taken on a more international character than before owing to Finland's NATO membership which was finalized earlier this year. This package depicts the highway strip in a fictional representation of what this year's exercise might look like, including some international visitors. No navaids or instrument approaches are available, but you can reach the highway base from nearby Kuopio Rissala Airport (EFKU) by flying a heading of 260° from Vehkaa Kuopio (VEH 113.00) VOR for 29 nautical miles.
One asphalt runway, 14/32, is available, and measures 2 946 meters or 9 665 feet long.
