THIS IS AN ARCHIPELAGO AT I T S G R E AT E S T A N D B E S T ! Islands, islands and more islands. Large and small. Inhabited and uninhabited. This is an archipelago in the truest and best sense of the word. The sea is always near. Even in the streets of central Mariehamn, you can feel the salty sea breeze. The archipelago of Åland has so many islands that anyone looking for solitude can find one to visit in order to experience the serenity and force of nature. The unique experience starts already on your journey to Åland. You will literally leave your daily routines behind when you board a passenger ship to Åland. In Åland, time passes in a particular island way. The clock seems to slow down. Your heart rate slows down. You are present, here and now. Yet, going from one location to another rarely takes more than 10 minutes. Åland offers more than you could imagine. Åland is a multifaceted realm

of islands packed with a variety of attractions, events, entertainment and culinary experiences within a relatively small area. A visit to Åland is a bit of a visit abroad for travellers from both Finland and Sweden. While the language spoken here is Swedish, Åland belongs to Finland as a selfgoverned region. Welcome to Åland! We wish you a great island visit! Personally, I’m most fascinated by the simple things – a boat trip to an isolated island, a barefoot walk on the cliffs warmed by the sun, a dip in the sea. POPULATION. Åland has 29,000 inhabitants, who live in the city, Mariehamn, and throughout the 15 rural and island municipalities.

VEHICLES. Åland has its own licence plates for motor vehicles, with ÅL as the identifier.

SELF-GOVERNMENT. Åland is a self-governed province in Finland. The Åland Government Building in Mariehamn houses the Parliament, which is the legislative body of 30 members, the Government of Åland, and the offices for regional administration. Self-governance is celebrated annually on 9 June to commemorate the first plenary session of the MPs elected by the people of Åland in 1922. LANGUAGE.

CURRENCY & TIME ZONE.

The official language is Swedish. Åland is demilitarised.

The currency is euro. Similar to the rest of Finland, Eastern European time is used. When it’s 12 noon in Sweden, the time is 1 p.m. in Åland.

FLAG.

MAIL AND STAMPS.

Since 1954, Åland has had a flag of its own – a red and yellow cross on a blue background.

Åland has its own stamps issued by the independent postal service, Åland Post. Many of the stamps have won prizes in international competitions.

HISTORY. The islands of Åland began to emerge from the sea 10,000 years ago. Åland’s history is presented at the Cultural History Museum of Åland. 2

A DIFFERENT REALM OF ISLANDS Åland is different. It is a realm of islands in the Baltic Sea with selfgovernment. It is a place where people fly a flag of their own and make their own laws. Åland is a land abroad, whether you come from east or west. Many visitors mention it – there is a special atmosphere in Åland. It’s all about safety and peace, and the constant presence of the sea. This is where the influences from the neighbouring countries come together. There are still traces from the Russian era when Åland, as part of Finland, belonged to the Russian empire. THE PEOPLE of Åland are self-reliant and ambitious. Owing to the demanding life on the islands, they are used to coping on their own and trusting in their own capabilities. But they have also had courage to set out into the wide world. They have sailed across the oceans and returned with new ideas and influences.

MARIA AND NIKOLAI TELL MORE ABOUT MARIEHAMN Why is there a statue of the Russian Empress Maria Alexandrovna next to the City Hall in Mariehamn? And who was Nikolai Sittkoff, the stiff gentleman outside of the gallery along the pedestrian street? Mariehamn has many stories to tell and many of them embrace the great navigation traditions. On your first visit to Mariehamn, it’s worth your while to take a walk up to the Badhusberget hill, which is home to the water tower. The panorama view is stunning. The main port in the west, Västra hamnen, serves the modern passenger traffic. Mariehamn is and has always been an important town for navigation. You can also see the masts of the four-mast sailing ship, the Pommern, one of the foremost symbols of Mariehamn. Then look towards the city centre and see how green it is – there are so many trees in Mariehamn! Finally, look to the east and marvel at how close you are to the shoreline!

LONG TRADITION OF HOSPITALITY A bathing establishment was built in 1889 which made Mariehamn a popular spa resort for some decades. Prosperous guests stayed for weeks to enjoy the invigorating treatments and entertaining social life. The Doctor’s House, where guests were prescribed healthpromoting cures, still stands in the park. The spa gave Mariehamn its first start as a tourist destination.

MARIEHAMN WAS FOUNDED on 21 February 1861. At that time, Åland belonged, as part of Finland, to the Russian empire ruled by Czar Alexander II. Mariehamn was named after the Czar’s spouse, Maria. This is why there is the statue of Empress Maria, dressed in a fashionable crinoline, next to the City Hall. AT THE END OF the 19th century, Mariehamn had around 1,000 residents. Along the few streets of the town, there were stores run by tradesmen such as Nikolai Sittkoff. His store on Strandgatan sold merchandise imported from foreign countries. Sittkoff was the first major shipowner in Mariehamn. TODAY, Mariehamn is a small big city. It is the location for Åland’s governing bodies – the Government and the legislative Parliament. There are banks and insurance companies, shipowner companies’ headquarters, as well as attractive boutiques, restaurants and cafés. But you can also find natural environs nearby. The seaside area, Lilla Holmen, offers a beach for swimmers, and the pleasant green landscape of Tullarns äng is just a stone’s throw from the city centre. There are beautiful paths along the seaside for a stroll. HILDA AND LARS created much of the architecture of Mariehamn. Having grown up in Mariehamn, Hilda Hongell studied to become the first female “master builder” in Finland. She designed numerous town houses for Mariehamn. Many of them can still be seen in the city centre. The Church and the City Hall are among the works by architect Lars Sonck.

Åland is the main island. Åland also is an archipelago of thousands of smaller islands and islets. Many of the islands are connected by bridges, embankment roads and ferries. This makes it easy for you to explore the entire area of Åland by car or bike. For a visitor, Åland appears as a single large archipelagic region. But there is one special aspect you should know when talking with locals. When they speak of the “archipelago”, they refer to the islands east of the main island. For them, the rest is simply mainland. HAVE A LOOK AT THE MAP. Wherever in Åland you are, the sea is always nearby. The bays and coves cut far into the main island, and there is even a large inner sea, Lumparn. ON THE MAIN ISLAND, you can easily make a tour around either by car or cycling. The distances are short. The main island is about 40 km long from south to

north and only a bit more from east to west. At the end of the road, there is often a ferry, which takes both cars and cycles. HAVE ANOTHER LOOK AT THE MAP! There are many smaller islands worth a visit. Föglö is a great destination for a day outing. After just a short ferry journey, you’ll arrive in Degerby, a charming village with houses side by side and opportunities for shopping and dining. Vårdö is another island that you can reach by car or bike from the mainland – the scenic route includes a ferry, a long bridge and several embankments roads. Take a look at the beautiful country houses, visit the school museum and enjoy the nature!

If you have more than a day, the island of Kökar in southeastern Åland is definitely worth a visit. Stay preferably for a night or two. Back in the Middle Ages, Kökar was along the important water route from southern Sweden via the Åland islands to Reval, today known as Tallinn, Estonia. Ships came and went, and eventually a chapel for seafarers was built in the 13th century. Later, in the 15th century, a Franciscan monastery was built on the island, and you can still spot many historical remains near the church of Hamnö. There are many, many other islands for you to discover, all with their own particular charm.

RELAX – BE ACTIVE

Åland serves up natural experiences on a silver platter. What would you like best? Paddling, cycling, hiking or climbing? Or would you like to try a bit of everything? Åland offers plenty of opportunities for relaxation and activities in its unique natural surroundings. Glide along amidst the islands. Silent and calm. A duck swims with a flock of small downy ducklings in its wake. They are not frightened by your canoe. You can smell the creeping junipers on the nearest island. You can see a fish splashing in the reeds. That’s how it is. Paddling in Åland, you will see more, smell more, sense more of the magical archipelago nature. You can keep to the inner islands and small bays, or you can paddle out to sea to enjoy the unfettered horizon. EVEN AFTER A DAY spent canoeing, there is still a lot more for you to do and see ÅLAND TRAVEL MAGAZINE

amidst the beautiful nature. Olle Persson is an enthusiastic outdoor traveller who likes to hike, cycle and paddle, and now he has made it easier for others with the same interests. He has explored Åland from north to south, from east to west and collected his best tips to a book. – Åland offers ideal opportunities for outdoor activities, he writes. LIKE SO MANY OTHERS, he praises the short distances in Åland. Everything is within easy reach. The interaction between the sea and the land, the constant presence of both aspects – this is what makes the Åland experience special. Those who are interested in outdoor activities also appreciate the ferry traffic operating between the largest inhabited islands. The ferries run several times a day, usually according to a timetable, so they provide reliable transportation for activities in and around Åland. If you wish, you can paddle to an island and take a ferry back. It is possible to take a canoe onboard for a fee. The same goes for bikes. But, just to be sure that there is space for your gear, it’s advisable to book in advance. Especially during the high season, the car deck may be crowded.

Timetables are available online at www.alandstrafiken.ax. CYCLING in Åland can take many different forms. Some pack their tents and camp cookers in a bike trailer and hit the road. Others prefer more comfortable options for sleeping and dining, and so select a cycling package that includes accommodation. Many cyclists prefer to have a base camp, for example, a cosy guesthouse from which they can make shorter or longer day trips. The direction is determined by the weather, the wind and one’s interests.

CYCLING PACKAGES WITH OPTIONAL ROUTES Both Viking Line and Eckerö Linjen sell cycling packages that include almost everything: the bikes and helmets, optional route plans, accommodation and delicious meals. You only need to select a package and start pedalling. Simple and relaxed.

SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE!

RESPECT THE NATURE Enjoy the nature with a respectful attitude. Leave nothing behind, expect for your footprints, which will be flushed away by the next rain. You can freely move around in nature, but it is preferable that you stay on marked paths and trails. Avoid private properties, shores and cultivated fields. Close any gates you open. Do not make an open fire on land or use disposable BBQ sets. Keep dogs on a lead. Would you like to set up a tent? Choose the nearest camping area or ask for permission from the landowner. Read more about the public right of access in Åland at www.visitaland.com/ commonaccess

HIKING TRAILS of different lengths are accessible in various natural surroundings. If you choose a longer trail, it is possible to arrange for accommodation near the trail. Between the two principal historical attractions in Åland, namely the Kastelholm castle and the ruins of the Bomarsund fortress, there is a 15-km-long trail, Kyrkleden. The scenery along the trail

includes some dramatic views with high rocky walls and beautiful sea bays. In many places, there are short paths with information boards telling about the local nature or history. WOULD YOU RATHER try steep rock climbing? It is possible in Åland. Getabergen offers excellent opportunities

for bouldering, and in Mariehamn, in Western Harbour, there are steep walls with bolted routes. Would you like to see Åland on horseback in the company of other enthusiasts? Riding schools welcome guest riders and provide guided riding excursions.

BALANCE IN LIFE Time for yoga on holiday? Different types of yoga are offered by Yoga House So Ham in Mariehamn and Yoga Samprema in Godby.

THE SEA tempts you to try different activities. It sure looks fun when kitesurfers are flying over the waves using their colourful kites, doesn’t it? Jumping high, swinging through the air, landing on the surface and then swooping in the other direction. According to kitesurfing instructor Patrik Larsson, it takes just 5 hours to learn the basics. It’s 90% technique, 5% strength and 5% courage. In Åland, there

18

are a couple of excellent sandy beaches that are particularly good for kitesurfing. And of course – the sea is also ideal for other water sports and fun, such as surfing and jetskiing. IN WINTER, when the sea is covered in ice, the tour skaters come out. They study their maps, consult with other enthusiasts and make plans for the day’s tour.

Perhaps today’s tour involves skating from the main island to a smaller island, and riding back on a ferry? Or perhaps it means being transported by car to a suitable starting location and skating all the way back? It all depends on the winds. Don’t forget that Åland also has many inland lakes that become ice-covered earlier than the sea. They are great for a day tour on skates.

THE RENOVATION OF THE SLOTTSBANAN COURSE The Slottsbanan (“Castle course) will be reconstructed and upgraded in such a way that preserves and respects its spirit as a generous and open seaside course. The renovation covers all aspects from the bunkers and fairways to the greens and the park areas. The seaside areas will be more clearly involved in the actual game play. The extensive project will start in the autumn as planned, with the reopening scheduled for the 2020 season. In the meantime, you are welcome to play on the existing Slottsbanan course in anticipation of new, exciting experiences!

Do you have the courage to attempt to hit directly over the water at hole 17? Or would you prefer to play on the safe side and target the dry land on the left? Golf in Åland is a truly archipelagic experience. The courses are surrounded by beautiful sea bays in several directions. Imagine a crisp autumn day. The light haze that lingered over the sea in the morning has dissolved. The surface of the water reflects the medieval castle. You are about to start a round on Slottsbanan, the “Castle course”. This 18-hole course is the absolute favourite for many golfers in Åland. It is a friendly and generous course, but definitely not too easy. Every hole has its special features, whether it be a tough bunker, fun near the sea or a wooded area that challenges you to try a shot over the trees.

ÅLAND GOLF CLUB near the Kastelholm castle has been visited by thousands of happy golfers since its opening in 1983. Over the years, the facilities have expanded. The short 6-hole course entitled Prinsessan, the “Princess”, was opened a few years ago. It’s ideal for both advanced players looking to hone their putting skills and beginners who prefer an easier round. Do you feel your swing needs adjusting? Or are you looking for more confidence in short shots? It’s advisable to book a time for instruction in advance.

HOLE 18 is a relatively challenging finish. It’s not too narrow but nor is it wide enough to allow you to hit the ball at just any angle, and moreover, there is a slight uphill all the way from the tee to the green. Finally, it’s time to wrap up the round at the club house. You may choose to take a seat on the terrace and watch others play at hole 9. Or, you may decide to continue playing in the Kungsbanan, the “King’s course”. It has a totally different character with narrower holes and harder uphills.

ECKERÖ GOLF, located on the western coast of Åland, offers an 18-hole course in a varied environment with fields and forests. The course has been upgraded over the past years and, as a special feature, each hole also has a tee at a shorter distance so that even those who have a shorter stroke have a chance to make par. THE GOLF SEASON in Åland is long, from early spring to late autumn. Some enjoy playing amidst the pale green hues of the early season. Others prefer autumn when the foliage is colourful and the air is fresh. What is your favourite season?

ÅLAND IS A FISHING PA R A D I S E A L L YEAR ROUND In October, the sun is pale. The nature is calm and restful. From the shore, you can spot people off in the distance. One appears to float on the water, while another stands in the waist-deep water. The uninitiated can only wonder what they are doing. THE ANSWER: They are fishing sea trout – and the fish are biting! Birds have migrated south and summer boaters have gone home. The autumn air is cool and nature is preparing for its winter slumber. It’s the time for a special experience in the calm autumn and winter nature, namely sea trout fishing! It’s peaceful, yes, but also thrilling and exciting. How many fish can you manage to catch? AFTER SEVERAL HOURS outdoors, it’s lovely to return to a cottage, take a bath in the sauna and enjoy a proper meal. Åland offers fine shorelines facing the open sea, which are perfect for fly-fishing from the shore or a belly boat. The sea trout bites best in the winter season from October to early summer. When the sun begins to warm the air in March-April, another kind of fishing and natural adventure awaits. Come again in the spring! ÅLAND is a fishing paradise all year round, offering a wide range of opportunities. One specialty is the ravenous pike hiding among the reeds. People also fish for perch, salmon, whitefish and pikeperch, and in the winter, when the sea is covered in ice, they catch fish with a line and hooks through an opening in the ice. THE DISTANCES are short. This means that you don’t have to make a choice. You can experience the thrill of sea trout fishing in the morning and pulling up a pike from a sheltered bay in the evening! In order to get the most out of your fishing holiday in Åland, it’s a good idea to request help from a local sport fishing guide. They are familiar with the fishing grounds and know where the chances for a good catch are the best – today!

GUSTAF AND GUNNAR – GREAT NAMES IN NAVIGATION

THE POMMERN UNDER DEVELOPMENT

These two dynamic men are excellent examples of Åland’s success in seafaring.

A lot is going on around the pride of Mariehamn, the museum ship s/v Pommern, which is normally moored next to the Åland Maritime Museum.

Gustaf Erikson (1872–1947) went to sea at the age of 10 and moved up through the ranks. Later on, he became world famous as the owner of the “last great fleet of sailing ships”. He owned a total of 66 merchant ships, including several windjammers that sailed in the grain trade from Australia to Europe. Gunnar Eklund (1916–2009) was a sea captain from Åland who had a vision. He saw the future potential in transport between Sweden and Finland via Åland by car ferries that provide cabins, lounges and dining rooms for a more enjoyable passenger experience. The first ferry was bought from England and started operating in 1959 as the m/s Viking. Over the years, the traffic has developed by leaps and bounds. Today, Viking Line is headquartered in Mariehamn and has a fleet of seven passenger ships operating in the Baltic Sea.

THE EQUIPMENT available for today’s captains and first officers is quite different from what their predecessors had 26 on their sailing ships.

A project is underway to construct a protective dock around the vessel, so she had to move out for a while. The project also includes onboard renovations aimed at providing brand-new experiences under the concept “The Pommern – 100 days under sail” after the reopening in May 2019. During the season 2018, the Pommern welcomes visitors on guided tours in her temporary location in Western Harbour. Access is limited to some parts of the ship. Inaugurated in 1927, the Church of Mariehamn provides an example of the wealth Åland has gained through navigation. The local shipowner August Troberg and his wife Johanna had donated a total of 1.2 million Finnish marks to fund its construction. It was a huge sum of money, enough to pay the construction of the church and some of its interior.

Åland may be a small spot on the world map, but in the history of navigation, this island realm plays a key role. Many Åland-based shipowners have steered their fleet over oceans worldwide. Many Åland islanders have worked at sea and returned home with new influences from abroad.

THERE WERE successful shipowners already before August Troberg. And many others have followed in his footsteps. Many shipping companies are headquartered in Mariehamn, such as Viking Line, with 7 ships operating in the Baltic Sea and more than 2,700 employees, and Rederi Ab Eckerö, with its 5 ships and 1,200 employees. Navigation has also contributed to making Åland a more international

community. Companies in other branches, such as insurance, ICT or electrical installations, have specialised in the requirements of navigation, and they operate worldwide. PRACTICALLY ALL FAMILIES in Åland have members who are engaged in navigation. Education in the field also has long roots – a national navigation school was founded in Mariehamn in 1868. Today, the school educates master mariners and engineers, with students coming from east and west. ÅLAND MARITIME MUSEUM offers many gems from the era of sailing ships. One of them is the reconstruction of the Captain’s dining room on the Herzogin Cecilie, the four-mast barque that was shipwrecked off England’s coast in 1936. She was owned by the major Åland shipowner Gustaf Erikson.

MAGICAL LIGHTHOUSES AT S E A

SÄLSKÄR.

Lighthouse islands possess a particular charm and magic. On the one hand, there is freedom and the ever-changing sea view. On the other hand, there is isolation and loneliness. Not to forget the lighthouse keeper’s important duty – to ensure that the light shows the way for seafarers in the dark. In Åland, three lighthouses are open to visitors: Lågskär, Märket and Sälskär. THE LÅGSKÄR island group stands out from the sea about halfway between Sweden and Åland, at about 14 nautical miles south of Mariehamn. The 33-meter-high lighthouse was completed in 1920 and it was described as being “an architecturally beautiful creation with classical features”. At most, 20–30 people lived permanently on Lågskär. It was an extreme place to live. In wintertime, they were completely shut off from the surrounding world for long periods of time.

KOBBA KLINTAR.

THE MÄRKET lighthouse stands on a bare, treeless island in the middle of the sea. They say it is the windiest place in all of Finland. When the storm is raging, waves roll over the island. The north-side windows must be covered with steel plates to protect them against the force of the swell. Märket is also special because the border between the states of Finland and Sweden zigzags across the island. The lighthouse was manned until 1976. THE SÄLSKÄR lighthouse is white and slim, and the whole island appears to be a bit more welcoming than Märket. Razorbill nest on the neighbouring island. THE OLD PILOT STATION Klobba Klintar along the entry to Mariehamn is easy to visit and easy to fall in love with. The island offers awesome scenery and maritime history. The new white building provides visitors with a dose of local culture.

Welcome to the Middle Ages and Kastelholms Castle! Kastelholms Castle from 1380 is the only medieval castle on Åland. The castle had its glory days under Gustav Vasa when Åland and Finland belonged to Sweden. After having been enlarged and built out in different stages up until the 1630s, the castle fell into decay after several fires. Nowadays it is restored to a “living ruin” and is open to visitors May through September.

SPROUTING AND GROWING IN THE COUNTRYSIDE IN ÅLAND In northern Åland, apple trees grow densely in orchards. They are a fantastic sight when in bloom in early summer. In autumn, the trees yield an abundant crop of colourful, juicy and healthy fruit. Initially, there were some innovative farmers who understood that Åland is perfect for growing apples. Today, Åland is the largest apple orchard in all of Finland.

32

Already in the 1940s, the farmers in northern Åland understood that the small fields in between the rocks and sea would be more suitable for growing apple trees than grain. In addition, the climate in Åland is optimal for fruit trees – plenty of sun hours in summer and a long and mild autumn. This is thanks to the surrounding sea that stays warm long after the summer. IT WAS THE BEGINNING of a success story. The experiences and traditions have been passed on from one generation to next. The plantations have expanded and the storage methods have developed. Today, three out of four apples in Finland are grown in Åland. Pear trees are also grown commercially. BUT THIS IS not all there is. Onion and potato crops are important. A large portion of potatoes actually become crisps in Åland’s largest factory. Asparagus is harvested in the spring and several other vegetables in the autumn. The countryside of Åland is very much alive and thriving – it sprouts, grows and yields a crop. You may also see cattle grazing on pasture. Both beef and milking cattle are often kept outdoors, as are the sheep with their lambs.

ÅLAND TRAVEL MAGAZINE

THE FARMERS AND BREEDERS do even more. They have dairies and slaughter houses that produce quality foods. Some turn milk into delicious cheese. Others smoke meat to be served as savoury mettwurst or sausages, or cook sea buck thorn berries into tasty marmelades. Many of their products have won prizes in competitions outside Åland. For example, a beer sausage, Ölkorv by Marskogens Lamm, won the gold medal in its class in Sweden’s Championship for Artisan Food held in Eldrimner. In the Finnish Championships in Artisan Food, gold medals have also been awarded to Åland-based companies, for example, the Mattas farm dairy. ÅLAND HAS TWO BREWERIES, which make a range of different beers – one of the most popular beers is flavoured with honey from Åland. Åland’s own dairy prepares a wide selection of cheeses, yoghurt, ice-cream and other products from the locally-sourced milk. The milk has an exceptional archipelago taste, largely thanks to the variety of grass and herbs growing in the calciferous soil where the cows graze. Many of the cheeses have won prizes in national tasting competitions. Among the cheeses, Ålands Special is a classic, whereas Kungsgård, Prostens and Pommern are more recent.

The countryside in Åland is alive and thriving.

Åland’s celebrity chef MICHAEL BJÖRKLUND has shown the way.

BAKERIES IN ÅLAND bake the national breads – the hemvete white bread, which is equally suitable for breakfast and with fish soup, and the svartbröd dark bread, which is a perfect match for fish dishes. Try this for a late supper: heat some Åland butter in the pan, fry a few slices of dark bread and enjoy with cured salmon or herring! Stores in Åland like to specifically display locally produced goods. Many products are also sold on local market days, which are frequently arranged, especially during the summer. ÅLAND CHEFS are dedicated to using the finest local ingredients. Åland’s best known celebrity cook and award-winning chef, Michael Björklund has contributed to numerous TV food shows for both Finnish and Swedish channels. He has shown the way – if he can do it, anyone can!

Tips! THE CULINARY ÅLAND

The local chefs spur each other on and compete in serving delicious foods made with primarily locally produced ingredients. Pub Stallhagen, for example, has no fixed menu, but the meals are made using those ingredients that happen to be available on the particular day! IT’S EASY to eat well in Åland. There are plenty of restaurants across the islands. The White Guide Nordic, a restaurant guide that tests and lists the best restaurants in Scandinavia, mentions five of them – Nautical, Indigo and Kvarter5 in Marie hamn, Havsvidden in Geta in northern Åland, and Michael Björklund’s Smakbyn in Kastelholm. Michael likes to engage in talking with the guests. Many cafés are also proud of not serving anything but home-baked delicacies. Some also sell local handicraft products.

The village view was painted by Finland Swedish artist Elin Danielson-Gambogi during her stay in Önningeby. Take a tour to the village to see the old farmhouses and windmills.

S E E Å LAND T HR O U GH TH E AR TI ST S ’ Elin Danielson captured a view of the village with its red-painted buildings and windmills. J.A.G. Acke portrayed fishermen at work on the ice. Victor Westerholm depicted cattle grazing in woodlands. Life in Åland around the turn of the 20th century is well preserved in art. Artists from both Finland and Sweden gathered here and the rural life offered many popular motifs for them. 36

While Denmark has its famous Skagen Painters, Åland has the Önningeby Colony, which started in the 1880s. The primus motor for the artists’ colony was Victor Westerholm, who is today known as one of Finland’s most prominent landscape painters. He originally came just to paint in Åland, but eventually he bought a house near the Lemström canal. He invited his artist friends to Åland and they came for shorter or longer periods, lodging on farms in the nearby village of Önningeby. Known as “the artists” to the villagers, they spent their days painting, mostly outdoors. In the evenings, they gathered at the Westerholms’ home.

THE VILLAGERS had a positive attitude towards the artist colony, even though their lifestyle must have appeared quite different from their own everyday toil. The villagers also posed for portraits or were depicted as engaged in their daily work. The Önningeby epoch ended after World War I, but the artwork lives on. ÖNNINGEBY MUSEUM, which originally started in an old barn, has a permanent exhibition to display its collection of works by the Önningeby artists. The museum’s recent acquisitions include “Morgondimma” (1888) by J.A.G. Acke, which shows three men scything

JUHA P CAPTURES THE ÅLAND NATURE Artist Juha Pykäläinen came to Åland with the intention to paint, just for one summer. Eventually, he moved here permanently. Today, he is among Åland’s most renowned nature painters. His paintings capture an eider mothering her young, an elk in the forest, water lilies in the lakes. He never gets tired of painting natural motifs. He loves the variation in nature, ranging from bare cliffs to deep forests, and is fascinated by the light and its shifting tones over the course of a day or a whole year. Juha is multitalented. When he lets his brushes rest, he sculpts in wood and concrete. His art also serves practical purposes – the large elk sculptures you may spot in Åland are actually hunting towers.

EYE S in the morning fog. Another painting by Acke, “Snöljus”, is praised as the most remarkable work created during the 30-year history of the artists’ colony. The 4.6 m wide and 1.6 m high panorama shows winter fishing with a seine.

IFK MARIEHAMN H E AT E D UP THE FOOTBALL C L I M AT E I N ÅLAND Åland may be small, but it has two football clubs playing in the top leagues in Finland. There are numerous indoor sports halls standing side by side, and various cup tournaments and other competitions occurring throughout the year. There are 11-year-olds playing football on practically every grassy field in Mariehamn and its surroundings, and there are triathletes swimming from one island to another and running across the islands. In brief, Åland is an island realm full of sports.

What a gold celebration in Åland! The green-white football club IFK Mariehamn achieved something highly unlikely in 2016 – the team won the Finnish Championship! Immediately the phone started ringing at the club office. Reporters from England, the USA and Ireland wanted to hear about Åland’s recipe for success. Agents from all over the world made contact like never before. Clubs in Sweden wanted to come over and learn more. ALL OF THEM had the same question. How could a football team from the little region of Åland become the best

40

in the country? With resources that were hardly measurable by the major clubs’ standards? The leaders say it’s all about being goal-oriented and taking the right steps to reach stability and create team spirit. Limited resources can be converted into positive action. Everyone in the team assumes respons ibility and everyone’s input makes a difference. IFK Mariehamn’s home arena is the Wiklöf Holding Arena, which is located just a stone’s throw away from central Mariehamn. It’s also the arena for the ladies’ Åland United, which is in the top league as well.

ÅLAND INVESTS in sports. Many don’t believe it before they see, with their own eyes, the row of sports halls standing side by side. They are equipped for swimming, ice hockey, bowling, judo, gymnastics, tennis and badminton. In addition to the venues dedicated to particular sports, there are larger all-round halls where people can play, among others, volleyball, floorball or basketball. In Åland, there is even a hall that has room for a full-length indoor football field. IN ADDITION, there are numerous outdoor facilities. Some football fields with artificial turf are open for games in the winter. There are also arenas for athletics and training tracks in the undulating terrain. ÅLAND TRAVEL MAGAZINE

SPORTS CLUBS and associations often come to Åland to start or end their season. They book times for training in the desired halls, share accommodation and build up team spirit during a few days in a pleasant island environment. Many Finnish and Swedish teams have also discovered that Åland is a perfect setting for mini-international competitions – both teams travel to meet midway between the two countries!

ÅLAND TRAVEL MAGAZINE

THERE ARE PLENTY of annual cup tournaments. Alandia Cup is the largest event. About a thousand 11-year-olds come to Åland to play football for a few intense days. The participants appreciate the fun and safe atmosphere, good food and short distances. It rarely takes more than 10 minutes by car to drive from one field to another – and there are no queues or traffic jams along the way.

The same goes for the accommodation, regardless of whether it is a hotel in Mariehamn or a seaside cottage. The transfer to the day’s game is quick and easy. Running events are arranged almost in all seasons. The most popular is the Kanonloppet event. You can walk, jog or run in a varied terrain. Triathlon enthu siasts come to Käringsund in August. Most people find an event they like. There are shorter and longer distances, tracks for kids and juniors, and relay runs.

THE ENTIRE ÅLAND IS A PA R A D I S E F O R T H E YO U N G E S T I N T H E F A M I LY What would the children prefer? Playing on the beach, angling perch from the pier or having fun on the waterslides in the swimming hall? Maybe they would like to search for Ruby the ship’s rat in the Maritime Museum. It’s easy for families with children to enjoy their stay in Åland. You can move from the beach to the playground and then onto a museum to take part in numerous fun activities - without any stress and hustle. The entire region of Åland is a paradise for children. The distances are short, much is within walking distance. If you travel by car, no distance is too long or tiring for the young ones. You can also opt to take a little ferry trip between islands – an exciting adventure! NATURE is always open for a stroll. There are many shorter trails and paths that suit the entire family. Take a packed lunch with you to enjoy in the woods or at the seaside! You may pick berries and mushrooms for own use. ÅLAND TRAVEL MAGAZINE

FOLLOW RUBY AT THE MUSEUM Ruby the ship’s rat has built her own exhibitions in the Åland Maritime Museum. They can be found in the rat’s holes inside the museum, which was, by the way, selected as the Best Museum in Finland in 2016. Remember – the rat’s holes are down at a low level!

PUBLIC BEACHES are available across Åland. They are all different. In Degersand, Eckerö, you may feel like you are in Denmark, because of its wide sandy beach and vast views over the sea. In Bamböle, Finström, the landscape is rocky with piers and a diving tower. Lilla Holmen, just outside central Mariehamn, offers a long shallow beach and a pirate ship for smaller children.

A BLUE ANEMONE TURNS INTO A HANDMADE PIECE OF JEWELLERY Every piece of jewellery is a result of forging, soldering, grinding, honing, filing and polishing. For goldsmith Maria Karlstöm, the first step is the free flow of creativity. A flower in a rock cleft, a sailing boat at sea, a leaf on a tree - anything can become jewellery in her workshop. Åland has many talented artisans. Maria is one of them.

After a holiday in the archipelago, it’s fun to return to great memories within your busy everyday life. Something to treasure and wear – time after time. Something that preserves your experience of Åland long after your visit.

A C C O M M O D AT I O N TO SUIT ANY PREFERENCE

What are your preferences for accommodation? In Åland, there are options to meet different desires, from a hotel room in central Mariehamn to a private, wooden cabin on an island with no electricity or other conveniences.

What would suit you and your company best? Are you visiting Åland primarily to experience the silence and peaceful atmo sphere? Or would you like to wake up and enjoy breakfast in a natural environment with the sea just a stone’s throw away? Then a cottage would probably be the best choice for you. There are several cottage villages, the largest of them generally also provide catering services as well as rowing boats, bikes and canoes for you to use.

Cottages are available on both the main island and in the archipelago. Car ferries running between the main island and the archipelago islands enable guests to travel around easily, also by car. Please observe that the time the journey takes varies from 30 minutes to two and a half hours, depending on the island to which you are heading. Across Åland, there are also guesthouses that offer accommodation in a homely environment.

THERE ARE ALSO individual cottages available if you are looking for a more independent holiday. You can even try to live like Robinson Crusoe and rent a cabin on an isolated island with no electricity!

WOULD YOU RATHER stay in central Mariehamn? You would be conveniently located for shopping and entertainment as well as seaside fun. There are many hotels for you to choose from, with sights and

Career opportunities in IT, finance, shipping and industry sectors Åland is unique and the width of the Åland business sector is impressive. From companies in insurance and financing to shipping and IT companies. From crafts and agriculture to high-tech industries that have customers all over the world. Åland offers good opportunities to speed up your career and work in an international market. See interesting recruitment ads by local companies on the following pages!

Åland has a shortage of labour, low unemployment rate and new team members are needed all the time. Here you can live in a safe environment and work in the global market, at the same time. Facts

THE ÅLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 62

Entrepreneurship has always been strong in Åland, and talented Åland entrepreneurs have built up successful companies that also work outside of Åland. – This creates dynamics. You’re always close to an entrepreneur who can act as a role model and source of inspiration, says Anders Ekström. Åland’s largest industrial enterprise produces potato chips and is a typical example of a success story. Entrepreneurial visionaries visiting the USA in the 1960s realized that potato chips would be a future product. Back in Åland they persuaded investors to start a local factory, and the rest is history; later on the factory became so successful that it was finally sold to the Norwegian group Orkla. ALL OVER THE WORLD In many smaller societies, the business community is dominated by one major operator. – Åland is distinctly different. We have an incredible width in the business community and can thus offer jobs where different experiences and skills are needed, says Ekström. Most companies work mainly in the domestic market in sectors such as crafts, trade and other services. But there are also global companies specialised in high tech services with customers almost all over the world. STRONG SHIPPING SECTOR Shipping has long and strong traditions in Åland. Many shipping companies, both passenger ferry and global cargo and tanker ship companies, have their headquarters in Åland. In addition, there are land-based companies that specialise in ships, for example IT companies developing booking systems, and electricity companies planning and installing electricity on new and rebuilt cruise ships on international yards. – Banking, financial and insurance sectors also have strong connections to shipping with significant international contacts, says Anders

CHALLENGES IN YOUR CAREER!

Ekström. This means that there are good opportunities to get a job in a challenging and global environment and to speed up the career in Åland. JOBS AVAILABLE ALL THE TIME Åland has a low unemployment rate, 3.9 percent in the beginning of 2017, and there is almost a shortage of labour. There are, as mentioned, jobs in many different industries and at different levels, but some sectors, such as the restaurants, healthcare and IT are constantly looking for new employees. Last year, a thousand people moved to Åland, most of them because of attractive job opportunities. – Everyone who visits us notices how everything is so close. In fact, in Åland we talk about “island time”. It’s 10 minutes to work, to kindergarten, to the next meeting, to the airport and to the ferry ports. Also, there are connections to four big cities 30 times per day. It’s unbelievable how effective the days can be when we don’t need to commute, says Anders Ekström. This means that the daily commuting time in larger cities can be used for something more fun. CONTACT US! Those planning to start a company in Åland can benefit from contacting Ålands Näringsliv. – We help you to create a network in Åland and contribute with counselling and advice. Regardless of background and specialisation, the common denominator is the opportunity to advance when focusing on the job! In international comparison we are a small and flexible company in which every team member takes an important personal responsibility. Living in Åland and working at Crosskey means combining the best of two worlds. You work in an international, often English-speaking environment and your customers are spread around the Nordic countries. At the same time you live in a serene and safe environment. The distances are short and the queues are non-existent. Rather than commuting to and from work, here you can spend your time on family and hobbies.

A bank for people who choose to follow their own path. An independent bank, with Åland common sense and a global view Ever since the Bank of Åland (Ålandsbanken) was founded in 1919, our focus has been very clear. We have built our operations in harmony with Åland Island entrepreneurs, who over time have not only expanded their businesses but have also benefited the Åland community. Our operations span a broad horizon, from private individuals who need a bank they can rely on to well-established corporations that are internationally successful and growing small businesses that were recently only good ideas. Today we are among Åland’s biggest exporters. We have been delivering financial services to the Finnish mainland since 1982 and to Sweden since 2009. We are now more than 650 people, working in nine different locations towards the same objectives. Our development has been favourable, but we have never forgotten where we come from – a small community where a handshake is a handshake and it is important to be able to look each other in the eyes, tomorrow just like today.

The Bank of Åland is building for the future The Bank of Åland is a different kind of bank. We attract attention because of our focus on good customer relationships, common sense and sophisticated financial services. We are in a strong growth phase and are looking for people who are attracted by high ambitions and a strong sense of personal commitment. We are continuously recruiting people with a wide range of skills. You will find our job advertisements (in Swedish) at www.alandsbanken.ax/jobb Welcome to the Bank of Åland!
