Abstract

Present study demonstrated pathogenicity of Aeromonas sobria in ornamental fish Botia rostrata (Günther, 1868). Juvenile fish (Weight: 2.7 ± 0.05 g; n = 180) were divided in two equal groups: one injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with 25 µl of sterile broth (C7); another with 96 h LD50 A. sobria suspension dose (1 × 107.261 cfu/ml; working volume: 25 µl) (T7). Fish were observed for abnormal clinical appearances and mortality. After 7 days, surviving fish from both C7 and T7 were analyzed for innate immunological parameters, ROS, cytokines, gill and liver histology. C7 showed no clinical aberrations and mortality, while T7 showed brown spots at lateral body portion, blood clots at fin base, bleeding ulcers in the middle of the head. Phagocytotic and sera lysozyme activity significantly (P < 0.05) decreased, respiratory burst activity and cytokine levels significantly (P < 0.05) increased in T7 compared to C7. Bacteria infected fish also showed gill lesions characterized by hyperplasia of epithelial cells and hepatic damage characterized by granulomatous inflammation.
