This museum is amazing! I've been a couple times and here's why you definitely need to visit if you're in London:
- Entry is free!!!
- Beautiful building
- Incredible lobby architecture
- One of the Easter Island heads
- THE Rosetta Stone
- Hieroglyphics from Egypt
- Surrounding neighborhood is cute (visit Cecil Court, a beautiful street of old-timey bookstores)
Okay are you sold?! To see all of those incredible things for free is such a gift for tourists. Don't miss it!Helpful 4Thanks 0Love this 7Oh no 0 - Neal P.Seattle, WA1110811May 3, 2024
If you want to have a positive experience, do yourself a favor and do not ask any members of the museum staff for help, directions, or questions. No matter how small, no matter how polite, they will scream at you in the face, especially security, who are the most obnoxious people I have ever encountered at a museum bar none. Prepare for chaos, long lines, tons of high school kids, and legions of confused tour groups. The quiet, thoughtful, Museum-going rxperience of years past no longer exists here. Was considering membership, but honestly after my experience today, I may never return.
Positives, collections are great, the restaurant staff is so nice and friendly. They arent affiliated with the Museum, so thats probably why.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 162148446Apr 14, 2024
The British Museum was a great addition to my London itinerary! I highly recommend stopping by for a visit. Two caveats:
1. I lived in Washington, DC's Capitol Hill neighborhood for 6 years, with the US National Mall within walking distance of my apartment. Needless to say, I love museums, and I made it a priority to stop by the British Museum while visiting London.
2. During my undergraduate studies, I concentrated in Africana Studies. I see clear overlap between colonialism, stolen artifacts, capitalism, the cultural cachet of the West, and imperialism. I mostly channeled that energy into nerding out on exhibits I care about and exploring other parts of the museum for the physical activity benefits and informal research.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - May 2, 20241 check-in
I wish I didn't pack so much to do on my trip so I could actually enjoy all of what this museum had to offer. Biggest plus is the museum is free, you just have to reserve your date and time online. The building is amazing, they have artifacts from all over the world. The British museum is a must visit when in London. If you have a really packed itinerary for what you have planned I'd say at the very least try to make 2 hours for this visit so you can at least get around and check out a decent amount of the museum.

After a morning seeing history on display, so much to see, to learn, to enjoy, time for a break. On top of the center is a lovely cafe offering a full tea, and lots more. Great service, delicious food. Perfect pause.
Enjoy!Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Feb 24, 2015Previous reviewCome here.
You must, the whole world is on display, right in front of your nose, along with a few thousand of your fellow human beings. Don't tell the surging crowds put you off, step up and through and take a moment. Figure out where you want to go, there's so very much to see.
Then dive in. It's glorious!
Enjoy! - Apr 17, 2024
Get tickets to the Life in the Roman Army exhibit!! I wrote a term paper on the Roman Army over 40 years ago (feels like it was closer to when they were actually around!). In the decades since, I've been a closet fan. This was the first time I got to see this exquisite of a collection of authentic equipment. The exhibits were well thought thru and highly recommended. By the time we got finished and went into the museum proper, we were shocked by the transformation from well managed flow to insane crowds. After less than an hour of finishing the show, we were gone. Couldn't handle the hordes. If you have the time, and the patience, this is a phenomenal museum full of priceless art & artifacts.

This is my 3rd time to London. And we made it a point to actually go here. Because everybody kept on telling us we missed out and its a true story.
This place is absolutely awesome. It's free. Our tour driver gave us the greatest hint on how to get in. Go a little later from your time slot and go from the back. You will go right in. And he was right. The line is in the front is long but there is no line in the back entrance. And if you come like 30 minutes after your slot you still get in but no line to wait.
There is so much to see in this museum. But my highlight was the Rosetta Stone.
Greek and Roman exhibits, and Egyptian exhibits. And yes the other countries probably want this all back by now. But you can see it all here for free.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - Muhammad S.Sugar Land, TX0185Apr 28, 2024

What an amazing trove of world treasures! Laid out in a navigable path, the museum is very user friendly and huge. The treasures inside are indescribably numerous. From the Rosetta Stone to ancient near east pottery, there is so much to see. The best part of it all, it's free!
In addition to the museum treasures, they have a cafe with coffee and pastries and other snacks and treats. In the center of the museum is the gift shop filled with all kinds of neat trinkets and takeaways. Personally, I think some of it is overpriced but how much is a memory worth.
The staff are littered throughout the museum and are exceptionally knowledgeable about their areas. Also, they are very friendly. Don't forget to stop by and get a map at the front desk. The maps come in a multitude of languages. They also have a QR code map and app too.
When you enter the grounds, you'll have to go through security, but don't worry, it goes fast. If you have a bag, be ready for it to be inspected.
Overall, if you're in London, it's virtually a sin if you don't check this place out.

Free admission and beautiful exhibits! The modern-style entrance is also photo-worthy. Great for first-time tourists in London!
I believe that the British Museum is one of the world's greatest and largest museums. You can spend hours and hours here and not be done. I do remember that I went for several days and saw different exhibitions and still was waiting to see them all. My favorite would be the--Assyrian collection.
Entrance is free to the museum but you can donate if you would like. Be aware of long lines getting into the museum and bag check, it can take some time.
For people who are interested in history, this is it, you will find so much here that you can't find elsewhere!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0
