Plants have nodding spikes of fragrant, white flowers and heart-shaped leaves. While insects often visit the flowers, they are mainly wind-pollinated. Lizard's tail is normally found growing in wetland habitats that receive some shade, though mature plants can survive drought conditions fairly easily. They produce numerous rhizomes and will spread aggressively in suitable areas.
