A former Yankee and a one-time major league home run leader turned some heads with his sartorial jersey choice — while also providing another reminder of his power.
Luke Voit wore a sleeveless jersey which was just a little bit more than half button-up during Saturday night’s minor-league game with the Syracuse Mets.
And he belted a home run.
But it wasn’t enough as the Syracuse lost 8-3 to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Rail Riders, the Yankees Triple-A team.
The 32-year-old Voit now has displayed some power for Syracuse since joining signing a minor-league deal with the Mets on June 12.
He has five homers and 13 RBIs in 15 games, but is hitting just. 217 (10-for-46).
It has been a rough season for Voit, who is trying to get back into the big leagues again.
The former Bombers slugger — who led the American League with 22 homers in the COVID-shortened 2020 season — signed a minor league contract with the Brewers in February and was released on June 2.
The first baseman, who also sees a lot of time as a designated hitter, didn’t hit any homers in 68 plate appearances during his brief 22-game stint with the Brewers.
Voit, who has 95 career homers, had an OPS of just .548 before the team decided to cut bait.
Those porous numbers are a far cry from his 68 homers he hit for the Yankees over the course of four seasons from 2019-2021.
But Voit was undone by injuries, and after the Yankees decided to re-sign Anthony Rizzo and make him their full-time first baseman, he was traded to the Padres for pitching prospect Justin Lange, who is still in the Bombers’ minor-league organization.
Voit didn’t last long with the Padres in 2022 and was included in the package they sent to the Nationals in the Juan Soto deal.
In 135 combined games with San Diego and Washington, Voit hit 22 homers, 13 for the Padres and nine for the Nationals.
