Times Square

New York is the city that never sleeps, and this is no better seen than when standing in Times Square. Take in the lights and sounds of this thriving metropolis. Times Square is the heart of New York with its yearly New Year's Eve celebration, larger-than-life billboards, and bustling city streets. No trip to New York City is complete without a pilgrimage to Times Square.

History of Times Square

The story of Times Square is one with ups and downs. The area began as a horse exchange in the 1890s. William K. Vanderbilt, the grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt, was a major proponent and businessman in the area. In 1904, the city was evolving and changing, resulting in significant changes to Times Square. The first subway system opened with a stop at Times Square. In addition, The New York Times moved into the area, leading to the naming. The square thrived up until the Great Depression. Unfortunately, the theater business on Broadway declined, which put a strain on Times Square. Crime rose as a result.

Over the next several decades, the area saw a roller coaster of good and bad years. This culminated in the worst of times during the 70s and 80s when crime, drugs, and homelessness were at an all-time high. The 90s and early 2000s brought an end to this. A major effort was undertaken to transform Times Square into a cleaned-up and family-friendly place. Disney helped this by opening its Broadway version of “The Lion King” in 1997.

Today, Times Square is one of the city's most popular and safest places for tourists.

What To See

When visiting Times Square, you cannot miss the billboards. These multi-story displays cost hundreds of thousands to millions for businesses to advertise. This is where advertising is at its best. There are even some with cameras that let you see yourself on one. Next, you will notice the lights. Visit at night to get the full illuminated effect.

The city arranges for art installations to be on a display rotation. This little piece of culture creates a new experience every time you visit. Finally, be on the lookout for street performers.

New Year’s Eve

Times Square is most famous for its New Year's Eve Party. Every year, millions of people from all over the world make the pilgrimage to see the performances and watch the ball drop.
