Gwen Stefani and Dory from Finding Nemo have something in common — their short term memory.

In a cover story interview with NYLON, the "What You Waiting For?" artist, 54, opened up about how remembering the stories behind her songs can vary.

Stefani can either recall them in vivid detail or they've completely escaped her.

“I’m like Dora,” she says, mistakenly referring to Dora the Explorer, but meaning the forgetful fish "Dory" from Finding Nemo.

Stefani adds, “I have such a weird memory. I think it’s part of the gift.”

The No Doubt rocker then opens up about a song she remembers making in vivid detail, "Purple Irises," her duet with husband Blake Shelton that they released in February.

The day Stefani wrote the song, her marriage had been on her mind.

“I had been going through those times where you’re questioning: ‘Oh my gosh, am I just getting older? Am I cute?’” she told the outlet. “In my own relationship, even though I know the truth of what’s happening today, you still create drama in your own mind about your insecurities and what might happen. I was in that phase of the relationship with Blake and getting paranoid.”

Shelton, 47, told NYLON: “It’s an insecurity we both have. These are conversations that she and I have with each other: ‘Are you still going to love me when I’m old or if I forget who I am?’”

While the "Cool" performer initially wrote the track as a solo song, her husband implied he wanted to be a part of it.

Together, the pair have "fantasized" about making a more formal singer-songwriter music project together.

"I feel like Blake and I are already a project together,” Stefani told the publication. “I’m always going to want to write music with Blake Shelton.”

The pop singer is set to reunite with No Doubt at Coachella this coming weekend.

The band reunited in 2012 to release their sixth album Push and Shove and last performed live together in 2015, however they have focused on solo endeavors since. Stefani was No Doubt's vocalist, backed by guitarist Tom Dumont, bassist Tony Kanal and drummer Adrian Young.

“It's just going to be cool. It's just going to be: get up there and do what we always do, which is play our music and try to connect and be so grateful that we got this amazing career that we never expected to have,” Stefani told PEOPLE in January of getting the band back together.
