Global description
Cyperus cyperoides is a tufted sedge with basal leaves, presenting a short, rhizomatous underground system. The leaf margin is finely scabrous and the stem is grooved. The inflorescence is a simple umbel subtended by numerous, long, leafy bracts. The spikelets are grouped at the end of the rays in small cylindrical heads. The spikelet has 1 to 4 flowers protected by glumes with pointed apex. The achene is trigonous slightly arched longitudinally and surmounted by a trifid style.
First leaves
The first leaves are linear with a long acute blade. The blade section is broad V. The margin is finely scabrous. At the base, the sheaths are short and disposed tristically. The young plant can come from seed or from a bud located on a short rhizome more or less woody.
General habit
The plant grows in a dense tuft from which many flowering axes develop. A tuft is 20 to 50 (up to 120) cm high.
Underground system
The roots are fasciculated. They are simple, threadlike and very numerous, fibrous in appearance. The underground system comprises short rhizomes more or less lignified carrying the basal parts of the old stems.
Stem
The stem corresponds to the flowering axis. It is solid and trigonous with clear angles, 0.5 to 5 mm wide. The faces are glabrous and finely grooved longitudinally.
The leaves are linear, arranged tristically and located at the base of the plant. They are 10 to 40 cm long and 2 to 9 mm wide. The top of the blade is sharp acute; the section is broad V-shaped. The margin is finely scabrous. At the base of the leaf blade is a closed sheath of triangular section. Both sides are hairless.
Inflorescence
The inflorescence is a simple umbel with 4-18 rays 0.2-12 cm long, sometimes with a few sessile spikes in the center. It is subtended by 5 to 15 long, linear leafy bracts 5 to 30 cm long and 0.2 to 1.2 cm wide. At the end of the rays are cylindrical spikes 0.7 to 3 cm long and 0.5 to 1.3 cm in diameter, containing 25 to 180 spikelets arranged perpendicular to the rachis.
Spikelet
The spikelets are compressed, and measure 2.5 to 7 mm long. They usually include one flower, sometimes 2 to 4 flowers. The glumes are weakly imbricated and arranged in 2 rows. The glume of the first flower is 3 mm long and has a sharp apex. It is marked with 4 to 6 veins. The ovary is surmounted by a trifid style exceeding the glumes. The inflorescence is green in color. The whole of the spikelet comes off at maturity.
Fruit
The fruits are oblong trigonous achenes 1.8 mm long and 0.5 mm wide. They are slightly arched longitudinally and topped with a long trifid style. The seed coat is smooth to finely papillose, reddish brown in color.

Northern Cameroon: Cyperus cyperoides is a species characteristic of very wet sandy or silty soils with good drainage. It grows on alluvial soils along watercourses or along the edges of ponds in humid grassy areas. In Northern Cameroon it is a minor weed that is very rare in dry annual crops (cotton, maize, sorghum, groundnuts).
Mayotte: Cyperus cyperoides is an uncommon native species in natural wetlands but frequent in degraded wetlands, especially in ditches, urban areas and agricultural plots.
