Our Guide To Keeping Pea Puffer Fish

  1. About Fish Species:

    • Scientific name: Carinotetraodon travancoricus
    • Common name: Pea Puffer, Dwarf Puffer Fish
    • Family: Tetraodontidae
    • Origin: Freshwater habitats in India (Western Ghats region)
    • Adult length: 2.5 cm
    • Lifespan: 3 to 5 years
  2. Tank Setup:

    • Pea Puffer Fish require a well-planted tank with plenty of hiding spots and smooth substrate as they like to sift through sand or fine gravel.
    • A tank size of at least 10 gallons is suitable for a small group of Pea puffers.
  3. Water Parameters:

    • Keep the water parameters stable with a temperature range of 24 to 28°C (75 to 82°F) and a pH range of 7.0 to 7.6.
    • Provide a moderate level of water movement in the tank.
  4. Filtration and Water Flow:

    • Use a sponge filter or a gentle filter to prevent the Pea puffer from getting stuck or injured.
    • Ensure there are no strong currents in the tank to avoid stressing the fish.
  5. Diet:

    • Pea Puffer Fish are carnivorous and should be fed a variety of small live or frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia.
    • Offer snails or snail meat occasionally to help wear down their continuously growing teeth.
  6. Tank mates:

    • Pea Puffer Fish are best kept in a species-only tank or with other peaceful tank mates that won't outcompete them for food.
    • Avoid keeping them with fin-nipping or aggressive fish as they may become stressed.
  7. Behavior and Compatibility:

    • Pea Puffer Fish have individual personalities and can be territorial, especially males during breeding.
    • They are not suitable for community tanks with larger or more aggressive fish.
