Description

Network Catfish Synodontis Aterrimus 5cm

Overview:

The Synodontis Aterrimus, famously known as the Network Catfish, is a captivating freshwater species, admired for its unique, web-like patterned body and peaceful demeanor. This species can add a touch of intrigue to any aquarium with its nocturnal habits and fascinating bottom-dwelling behavior. Typically growing to about 6 inches in length, they make a manageable addition for medium to large tanks.

Origin:

Native to the rivers and streams of Central Africa, Synodontis Aterrimus thrives in environments that mimic their natural habitat. They are commonly found in the Congo Basin, where they navigate the complex underwater ecosystems.

Feeding:

Network Catfish are omnivores with a preference for a varied diet. They thrive on high-quality sinking pellets, frozen or live foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Occasional vegetable supplements can also be beneficial. Feeding should occur during late hours to accommodate their nocturnal nature.

Tank Mates:

Synodontis Aterrimus is generally peaceful but may exhibit territorial behavior towards its own kind or similar bottom-dwelling species. Ideal tank mates include larger tetras, barbs, and other non-aggressive cichlids. It’s crucial to avoid pairing them with very small fish that could be mistaken for prey.

Aggression:

This species exhibits low aggression levels but requires ample space to establish territories. Providing hiding spots like caves or driftwood can help minimize stress and territorial disputes.

Experience Level:

Synodontis Aterrimus is suitable for intermediate aquarists. While not overly demanding, they do require a stable environment and consistent water quality to thrive.

Water Parameters:

  • Temperature: 75-82°F (24-28°C)
  • pH: 6.5-7.5
  • Hardness: 4-15 dGH

A well-filtered tank with moderate water flow and plenty of hiding spaces is ideal to simulate their natural riverine habitat. Regular water changes and monitoring of water parameters are essential to maintain their health.

Conclusion:

The Network Catfish is a fascinating addition to any freshwater aquarium, offering a blend of beauty, intriguing behavior, and a touch of challenge for the caring aquarist. With proper care and a suitable environment, Synodontis Aterrimus will thrive, bringing joy and fascination to its keepers.
