Finland has a special obligation to preserve the species 3. 48 nesting areas found 4. 6 nesting areas needed an exceptional permit to be destroyed 5. Permits provided crossing places for flying squirrel

15 E18 MUURLA-LOHJA PROJECT ROAD ENVIRONMENT 15 Flying squirrel strategy Biologists defined the crossing places, a minimum distance between trees should not exceed 50 m Crossing places provided that preserved trees needed to be marked before construction All builders working in the areas had specific instructions to preserve the marked trees The risks of building procedures were evaluated in advance Significant inconveniences in building Risks on damaging the trees Regular reports for environmental authorities and negotiations in solving conceivable problems
