HP LaserJet Enterprise M610, M611, M612 - Setting up the printer (hardware)

This document explains how to set up the physical parts of the printer. Complete these steps before installing the printer software on the computer.
If the printer hardware is already set up, see the Links to software installation instructions section at the end of this document for help with software installation.
Follow these steps to set up the printer:

Step one: Unpack the printer

  1. Select a site to place the printer that meets the following specifications:
    • A sturdy work surface, well-ventilated and dust-free area, and away from direct sunlight
    • Temperature range: 50° - 90.5° F (10° - 32.5° C)
    • Humidity range: 10% - 80%
  2. Allow sufficient space around the printer to open all doors and trays.
      caution:
    HP recommends that two people move the printer.
    Models that do not have an optional paper tray installed weigh 47.51 lb (21.55 kg).
    Models that have an optional paper tray installed weigh 58 lb (23.6 kg).

  3. Take the HP printer out of the box, and then verify that the contents match the illustration below.

  4. Remove the shipping tape from the outside of the printer.

  5. Press the cartridge door release button to open the door.

  6. Carefully pull out the cartridge drawer from inside the printer.

  7. Remove the shipping restraint.
    note:
    HP recommends recycling shipping materials whenever possible.

  8. Push the cartridge drawer back into the printer.

  9. Close the cartridge door.

Step two: Insert the cartridges

If you have a new toner cartridge, follow these steps to insert it into the printer. If you don’t have a cartridge, continue to the next step.
  caution:
If toner gets on clothing, wipe it off by using a dry cloth and wash the clothes in cold water. Hot water sets toner into fabric.
  1. Press the cartridge door release button to open the door.

  2. Pull out the cartridge drawer.

  3. Remove the new toner cartridge from its packaging.

  4. Hold both ends of the toner cartridge and rock it 5-6 times.

  5. Remove the shipping cover on the cartridge.

  6. Place the toner cartridge in the cartridge drawer.

  7. Close the toner cartridge drawer.

Step three: Load paper in Tray 2

The following information describes how to load paper into Tray 2 and the optional 550-sheet trays. These trays hold up to 550 sheets of 75 g/m2 paper.
note:
The procedure to load paper in the 550-sheet trays is the same as for Tray 2. Only Tray 2 is shown here.
  caution:
Do not extend more than one paper tray at a time.
  1. Open Tray 2.

  2. Remove the packing materials, shipping lock, and tape from inside the tray.

  3. Adjust the paper width and length guides by squeezing the blue adjustment latches and sliding the guides to the size of the paper being used.

  4. Load a stack of paper in the tray.
    note:
    To prevent jams, do not overfill the tray. Be sure that the top of the stack is below the tray full indicator.

  5. Adjust the paper guides so they lightly touch the stack of paper, but do not bend it.
    note:
    Do not adjust the paper guides tightly against the paper stack. Adjust them to the indentations or markings in the tray.

  6. Close the tray.

Step four: Connect the network cable (optional)

If you are connecting to a network, connect the network (Ethernet) cable now.
note:
A network cable is not included with the printer.

  caution:
Do not connect a USB cable now. To use a USB cable to connect the printer to the computer, connect it when prompted during software installation.

Step five: Connect the power cable and turn on the printer

  1. Connect the power cable between the printer and a grounded AC outlet.
    note:
    Make sure your power source is adequate for the printer voltage rating. The voltage rating is on the printer label. The printer uses 100-127 Vac or 220-240 Vac and 50/60 Hz.
      caution:
    To prevent damage to the printer, use only the power cable that is provided with the printer.

  2. Press the Power button to turn on the printer and then wait for it to initialize.

  3. On the control panel, set the language, date/time format, and the time zone.
    For advanced configuration of network-connected printers, enter the printer IP address in the address bar of a web browser after software installation is complete. To find the IP address on the printer control panel, touch the Information icon , and then touch the Network icon . To open the EWS, enter the printer IP address in the address bar of a web browser.
    note:
    You can complete advanced setup for network-connected printers from the Embedded Web Server (EWS) at any time after the printer IP address is established.

Step six: Enable the USB port

The high-speed USB port is disabled by default and must be enabled from the printer control panel.
Follow these steps to enable the USB port:
  1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch Settings.
  2. Touch General, touch Enable Device USB, and then touch Enabled to enable the setting.
  3. Follow the instructions below for your operating system:
    • Windows: Do not connect the USB cable until prompted during the software installation. Continue to the next step.
    • Mac: Connect the USB cable now.
note:
A USB cable is not included with the printer.

Step seven: Verify the printer functions

To verify that the printer prints, complete the following steps:
  1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch Reports.
  2. Touch Configuration/Status Pages.
  3. Touch Configuration Page, and then touch Print to print the Configuration and Jetdirect pages.
    If the printer is connected to a network, find the IP address on the Jetdirect page.
    • IPv4: If the IP address is 0.0.0.0, or 192.0.0.192, or 169.254.x.x, manually configure the IP address. Otherwise, the network configuration was successful.
    • IPv6: If the IP address begins with fe80:, the printer should be able to print. If not, manually configure the IP address.
note:
The Configuration Page includes firmware version information that you can refer to when updating the firmware.

Step eight: Update the firmware (optional but recommended)

HP regularly updates features that are available in the printer firmware. Update the printer firmware to take advantage of the most current features.
note:
Check with the network administrator before updating the printer firmware.
