Although recorded widely around the world, recognition of this species in South America is far from clear. Wilson (1975) indicated that his description of H. haemorrhoidalis could include several unnamed species. That author described the pore plates of male Heliothrips from Brazil as transverse oblong, but males from Southeastern Brazil matching the current description of H. haemorrhoidalis have oval pore plates ( Fig. 115 View FIGURES 107–120 ). Re-examination of previously identified specimens and comparison with recent samples is required to clarify species delineation, together with molecular and phylogeography studies to clarify species radiation. This species from the more southern areas of Brazil is closely similar in structure to the more northern species, H. longisensibilis , from which it is distinguished in the key above.
