With a population of only around 500 inhabitants, the island's main source of livelihood is fishing. Since 1975, Saona Island has been included within the protected areas of the Cotubanamá National Park, created by Presidential mandate.

One of Saona Island's main natural attractions is a natural pool located in the middle of the sea, with a depth of barely one meter.
