The robot dinosaurs are at the Bronx Zoo and the summer has fewer people on Monday-Thursday, so it is a great time to go, BUT..It’s HOT.

Going to the zoo when it’s hot presents special challenges. There are a few long walks (unless you want to wait for the shuttle with a lot of people standing in line), but most areas have shade. The dinosaur safari is in the back of a truck in the sun, but at least the line is shady. The zoo also has lots of cool, dark, and damp buildings throughout to duck in and cool off.

Here are a few tips for surviving a hot day at the zoo with kids.

Important Tips for a Hot Day at the Zoo

– Bring several water bottles and refill them at the foundations outside the bathrooms

– Wear hats and bring sunscreen… as you sweat you need to reapply to your face

– Bring a mister to spray yourself and kids with water for those moments you need to be in the hot sun

– Wear thin, long-sleeve shirts that you can get slightly wet to keep cool and keep the sun off at the same time

– Plan and time your route so you can alternate between cool buildings and the hot outdoor exhibits

– Rent a stroller if your little ones who usually walk get tired…they rent them there and this will help if you can’t handle walking at their speed in the sun (this also save you from carrying on the train)

– Bring cool food like berries and cucumber sandwiches (the zoo has mostly fried food throughout and not a lot of vegetarian options)

We liked the bug carousel for a shady chance to sit down while the kid(s) do not get bored. Unfortunately, some of the dinosaur dig activities after the dino safari were in full sun or under a hot tent, but there were some great shady spots for parents to hide.

Brace for the sun and do the nature trek. It’s worth it. Just make sure you all have your hats on and spray yourself down with some water if necessary. The ropes and tunnels and ladders are great fun for everyone and thankfully there is none of that obnoxious and offensive “jungle” music.  The Bronx zoo is more classy than that.

Similarly, with the dinosaur safari, make sure you put on your hat and be prepared to sit next to a few sweaty bodies. We were afraid that our daughter would be scared of the dinosaurs, but she wasn’t. She decided they were all her friends. The roars are not as loud as I imagined. Little ones over three should be fine.
