I recently bought 3 blue saulosi males with vertical black strips for about 5.99$ each,

the store owner only had what appear to be 1 female left so he told me to come back later in the week,

but im slitly confused on about which are the females,

are the females the one that are complete yellow or the ones that are yellow with a black line along the top fin? or are those both females?

for example on this youtube video they show what appear to be females but fast forward to second :51 and :52, you can also forward to 1:05.
you can clearly see 2 yellow females but one containing a black line across its top fin and the 2 bottom fins, is that considered a female of Pseudotropheus saulosi?

please pm me or reply back, many thanks - fish lover

Description: The saulosi is considered a dwarf mbuna because it reaches a size of only 3-4 inches. Males are blue with black vertical bars, and females are a beautiful, deep yellow. Fry are born yellow and, as they near adulthood, will begin to show adult female and male colors.

Commonly, saulosi females do not have black on their dorsal fin. On the video, the only identified saulosi female with black on its dorsal fin, is the last one named as 1st female (I suppose she is the dominant female and even looks as a young male changing color). The others that appear earlier with black on their fins are yellow labs (Labidochromis caeruleus); a different species.

oh thats very weird because i went to the store and they had one yellow one with a black dorsal fin and it was yellow with darker yellow vertical lines on its body, but it was about 2 inch big, could that have been a female? or a yellow lab?

I must see it first; but yes, both are possibilities...or even a male saulosi changing color. Always ask at your lfs to id the fish you are buying.

yeah i asked him but to be honest they kinda seem like they just want to make money and say whatever they feel like instead of making the customer satisfied,

Yeah that happens; some time ago I bought a Rusty cichlid that was not a Rusty really. That's why is important to find a responsible lfs owner.
