My very first purchase of Ap. hoignei. Got this pair from C328. A quick shot of the male... Seldom see such a metallic bluish male and the color of the tail is intense instead of faded. The farms produce some awesome quality at times.

    Re: Apistogramma hoignei

Here's the female. Another quick shot without too much effort. Think i have lost the patience to sit infront of a tank for hours to shot apistos. . Plecos are so much more easier and faster to shoot, 10-15mins per fish.

    Re: Apistogramma hoignei

Hmm, are female hoignei supposed to have any red markings in the tail? Sometimes the fish from the supplier is amazingly beautiful, but too many times we end up with same-sex pairs.

In Cichlid Atlas 1 it is mentioned that females lack these markings on the tail.

It seems adult enough to be sexable. Fins and body development shows signs of a female. However, who knows, you guys may be right!

    Re: Apistogramma hoignei

    Fabulous picture A.hoignei.

Saw the pair last week at c328, didn't really take a second look because at that time the pair looked blackish maybe due to stress.

It appeared that the pair settled well in your tank

    Re: Apistogramma hoignei

Suprise suprise. The female bred while I was away for 2 weeks. Food source is primarily pellets or flakes. Water at neutral ph. But male cannot be found. Probably got KOed by the breeding female.

So guys never thrust cichlids atlas completely. It is written ages ago and according to romer's personal experience which could be different sometimes. I remembered him talking about bitaes being difficult to bred and sensitive to diseases which I beg to differ.

    Re: Apistogramma hoignei

Congratulations genes, I guess my worries were unfounded.

As for Romer's bit on the bitaes, I guess YMMV. Some folks have excellent luck with them. Others just have pretty bad luck on their survival/breeding when keeping them.

I think Romer's was lacking ADA soil when he kept the Bitaes.

Genes, Take good care of the fries.
