The Split in Caye Caulker, Belize - Everything You Need To Know

The Split in Caye Caulker, Belize

Caye Caulker is a small island that’s a laid-back alternative to busy Ambergris Caye. While you’re there, set aside some time to visit the Split.

What Is the Split?

The Split is the most popular destination in Caye Caulker. It’s a stretch of water that divides the island in two. The split was created by Hurricane Hattie, a 1961 cyclone that hit Belize with tremendous ferocity. This storm brought 165-mph winds that ripped through Belize’s coastline. After it passed, the caye had a wide channel of water running through it.

Since Belizeans are experts at making lemonade out of lemons, they christened the new channel the Split and turned it into the perfect place to take a swim.

A Favorite Local Hangout

Today, the Split is a magnet that draws visitors and residents looking for the perfect place to swim in the warm Caribbean waters, sit on an oceanfront balcony or hang out at a local beach bar.

Local businesses also made the most of the Split. There is now a seawall, a wading area, picnic areas, a spa, a rental shop, and a few restaurants and bars. The Split is where you’ll find the Lazy Lizard Bar, one of Belize’s legendary beach bars.

Grab a Drink and Some Sun

Music, drinks, and dancing fill the air around the Split. If you want to truly experience the spirit of the Split, you must grab some drinks at the Lazy Lizard. The Lizard features a long, wraparound pier with its own diving area, outdoor seats with sun umbrellas, and a lively atmosphere.

Enjoy a margarita, a rum cocktail, or a bucket of Belikins while you sit on the beach, watch the waves and work on your tan.

Try Something Different

Beach bars are a blast, and the Lazy Lizard is one of the best beach bars in Belize. If you’re looking for something a little different, however, head to the top of the Lazy Lizard. There, you’ll find the El Portal, a rooftop lounge that offers amazing views of the Split.

Gourmet seafood dishes and a sophisticated atmosphere make El Portal the must-visit new spot on the Split. Live music, karaoke and ladies’ nights are all part of the fun at El Portal.

Get On the Water

Caye Caulker offers more than sun and sand. It’s a premier destination for divers and snorkelers, who can find incredible places to see marine life here. Rental businesses provide kayaks and paddle boats that let you take in all the sights from the water.

If it’s on the water, you can do it here. Go kiteboarding, windsurfing, jet skiing, deep-sea fishing, or sailing. Rent a boat that will take you on a romantic sunset cruise around the island.

See You at the Split

The Split has become a favorite hangout for locals and visitors. When you visit Caye Caulker, don’t miss the chance to spend some time there.
