Introducing our himmeli star kit

Learn himmeli craft and make your own geometric brass himmeli Christmas star with our kit from Geo Attic

Welcome to the Cosy Craft Club's himmeli month! We really want to encourage you to have a go at making your own himmeli, and we'll be sharing the key things you need to know to get started. You can find all our himmeli posts in one place here.

Tap into the Scandi trend with this geometric brass himmeli star kit. Himmeli are traditional Finnish decorations in geometric shapes made from straight reeds or tubes.

Our himmeli craft kit was made by Geo Attic, and contains everything you need to make a himmeli brass star. I had it mind as a Christmas star when I picked this kit for December - it would look great on your tree or just as part of your Christmas decor - but it would also look pretty cool hanging out in your house all year round.

The kit is small, but the star that it makes is much bigger! It's such a beautifully presented kit too - I love its smart little envelope with a string tie to keep it shut.

Below you can see what you get inside this kit. I love all those beautiful shiny tubes, and couldn't resist arranging them like this. The contents are 3 sizes of brass tubes, brass wire, and the all important step-by-step instructions.

To create the himmeli star, you basically need to thread the wire through the tubes to connect them together. The instructions (thankfully) give you detailed instructions on how to connect them all up correctly!

The kit doesn’t come with anything to cut the wire, but wire cutters (such as ones for jewellery making), heavy duty scissors or garden secateurs could be used. I also found small pliers useful for manipulating the wire whilst putting the star together.

The trickiest bit was when you have to make the wire go back on itself through the same tube it came out of. It will want to kink and twist. I found that the best way was to push it through slowly (rather than pulling) as far as you can and being careful to keep the loop smooth as you go. When you are creating joints, don’t be afraid to pull the wire hard to make the joints meet closely.

And here is the finished star! I would have liked the joints to be neater, but if you don't look too closely it looks great :) I love the metallic brass and the geometric shape, and it’s a great feature in my living room.

Over Christmas, my star was pride of place amongst my gold themed decorations on our mantelpiece. It’s still there now actually - nestling among the plant pots and candles. It’s a great decoration for all year round!
