Capture vivid, highly detailed photographs over a wide range of shooting conditions with this special Canon digital SLR kit. It combines the ruggedness, speed, and versatility of the EOS 30D with a top-notch Canon 28-135mm image stabilizing zoom lens. This combo offers plenty of advanced shooting options plus the superior low-light performance and blur-fighting capability provided by image stabilization technology.

Low-noise 8.2-megapixel image sensor
At the heart of the 30D is its advanced CMOS sensor. Canon engineered it to produce less noise, resulting in sharper images over a wide range of ISO (light sensitivity) settings. You'll enjoy clean-looking shots even in low-light shooting conditions. This powerful 8.2-megapixel sensor gives you enough picture detail to crop out sections of your photographs and reproduce them as sharp, poster-sized prints.

Lifelike color and fast camera response
Then there's Canon's advanced image processing, which delivers natural-looking color and accurate white balance levels. It also provides faster image capture, allowing you to continuously snap photos at 3 or 5 frames per second for up to 30 shots in one burst. Save your images to optional CompactFlash® memory cards (no memory included). The responsive EOS 30D goes from "off" to "ready to shoot" in less than two tenths of a second, and shutter lag is minimal — only 65 milliseconds. It's the ideal camera for catching action shots on the go or keeping up with fast-moving toddlers.

Fine-tune the look of your images
The 30D's Picture Style presets give you sophisticated in-camera control of image quality for taking print-ready JPEG photos without the need for post-processing. Film photographers will love the ability to simulate the look of different film types. For example, choose the Portrait preset for softer, more pleasing skin tones, use Neutral for natural colors and subdued images, or Landscape for crisp, extra-sharp images with vivid greens and blues. There are six presets in all, plus three user-defined settings. Each preset can be custom tailored to your preference by adjusting sharpness, contrast, color saturation and color tone, then stored in memory for instant recall when you need it. For even more options, you can download additional Picture Style settings from Canon's website. Very nice.

Rugged SLR design
Canon wraps all this amazingly versatile technology in a durable magnesium alloy body. The included EF lens has manual zoom and focus rings for hands-on control. Want to expand your options? There are dozens of impressively sharp Canon EF and EF-S lenses available separately that are all fully compatible with the EOS 30D.

Features

Overview: This package contains the Canon EOS 30D digital camera and the Canon EF28-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM lens. Note: The same camera body is also available packaged with a different lens; item # 280EOS30DK contains the Canon EF-S 18-55mm lens.

Recording Media: The EOS 30D records images on a Type I or Type II CompactFlash Card. No blank media is included with this camera.

Image Recording Format: The camera records still images in JPEG and RAW formats.

Viewfinder: The EOS 30D uses an eye-level pentaprism viewfinder with a dioptric adjustment knob. By adjusting the diopter to suit your eyesight (with or without eyeglasses), the viewfinder image will look clearer. During self-timer or remote control operation when your eye does not cover the viewfinder eyepiece, stray light may enter the eyepiece and affect the exposure when the image is captured. To prevent this, you can use the eyepiece cover to cover the eyepiece.

LCD Monitor: The 2.5" color LCD monitor on the back of the camera enables you to review and select recorded images and adjust various menu settings. The LCD monitor cannot be used as a viewfinder to shoot.

8.2 Megapixel CMOS Sensor: Canon's large-area CMOS (complementary metal oxide semiconductor) sensor captures images with exceptional clarity and tonal range, and offers 8.2 million effective pixels. This APS-C size sensor (22.5 x 15.0mm) has the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras, enabling an effective angle of view that is 1.6x the normal EF Lens focal length. The EOS 30D has an extensive ISO range (from 100 to 1600 plus ISO 3200 in extended mode), which is selectable in 1/3-stop increments. The sensor features a newly developed set of narrow-gap microlenses and noise reduction circuits to improve performance at high ISO values, and optimized photodiode configurations for improved performance at all ISO values. This results in larger, clearer, sharper and more detailed photographs right from the start.

DIGIC II Image Processor: The DIGIC II Image Processor enhances every aspect of image capture. Information captured by the CMOS Sensor is processed and assembled into images of exceptional quality by this Image Processor. With the DIGIC II Image Processor on board, photographers can expect precise, natural colors, and spot-on white balance in any number of lighting situations. Through sophisticated signal processing algorithms, the DIGIC II Image Processor accelerates all aspects of image capture, while consuming less energy than other processors.

Image Resolution/Compression: You can choose from the following resolutions: Large (3504 x 2336 pixels), Medium (2544 x 1696 pixels), and Small (1728 x 1152 pixels). For each resolution, you can set the compression to Fine or Normal.

RAW File Format: The RAW file format records the image data as captured by the camera CMOS sensor without further processing. RAW images are compressed, but the compression is reversible so that a high-quality image can be obtained from the decompressed file without any loss of image quality. Whenever you use the EOS 30D, you can choose to have it record RAW files or JPEG files alone, or you can record RAW files and a JPEG files simultaneously.

Included Lens: The EOS 30D comes with an EF 28-135mm F3.5-5.6 lens with built-in Image Stabilization (IS) and an Ultrasonic Motor (USM). The Image Stabilizer gives the equivalent effect of a shutter speed 2 stops faster (at 135mm). This allows you to take effective hand-held shots at slow shutter speeds. You can turn the Image Stabilizer on or off with the switch on the barrel of the lens. The Ultrasonic Motor helps give you fast and quiet focusing.

Full-time Manual Focusing: The lens has a manual focusing ring that allows you to accurately focus on your subject. When set to the One Shot AF mode, you can manually focus on your subject, even when autofocus is selected.

Shooting Modes: The EOS 30D offers 12 different shooting modes arranged in the following zones:

  • Basic Zone:

    • Full Auto: the camera automatically selects the settings

    • Image Zone:

      • Portrait: blurs the background to make the human subject stand out

      • Landscape: this mode is for wide scenic views, night scenes, etc.

      • Close-up: use this mode to take close-up shots of flowers, insects, etc.

      • Sports: for fast-moving subjects when you want to freeze the action

      • Night Portrait: this mode is for images of people at twilight or at night

      • Flash Off: disables the flash

  • Creative Zone:

    • Program AE: this is a general-purpose shooting mode, the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture value to suit the scene's brightness

    • Shutter-priority AE: in this mode, you set the shutter speed and the camera automatically sets the aperture value to suit the brightness of the subject

    • Aperture-priority AE: in this mode, you set the desired aperture value and the camera sets the shutter speed automatically to suit the subject brightness

    • Manual Exposure: in this mode, you set both the shutter speed and aperture value as desired

    • Automatic Depth-of-field AE: this mode is for obtaining a wide depth of field automatically between a near subject and far subject

9-point AF (Autofocus) System: The EOS 30D has a precision 9-point AF system for speedy and accurate focusing in any situation. An improved focusing screen with precision matte finish enables brighter and easier manual focus. A newly developed multi-controller, conveniently located on the back of the camera for thumb-controlled action, allows you to instantly choose any of the 9 focus points, or direct the camera to choose them automatically. Focusing points are positioned in the viewfinder in a wide diamond-shaped array, allowing you to achieve focus quickly in numerous compositions and situations.

AF Modes: The camera employs one of 3 AF systems to let you seize every photo opportunity with fast, accurate focus. One-Shot AF is suited for still subjects, while AI Servo AF is for moving subjects. AI Focus AF switches from One-Shot AF to AI Servo AF automatically if the subject starts moving.

ISO Speed: When shooting in Basic Zone modes, ISO speed is automatically set between 100 and 400 to suit the shooting conditions. In Creative Zone modes, ISO speed may be set manually through the LCD screen menu to 100, 125, 160, 200, 250, 320, 400, 500, 640, 800, 1000, 1250 or 1600. When ISO Expansion is turned on, you can also select an ISO speed of 3200.

White Balance: You can choose from the following white balance settings:

  • Auto: the camera sets the white balance automatically according to shooting conditions, color temperature 3000-7000 K

  • Daylight: for recording outdoors on a bright day, color temperature 5200 K

  • Shade: counters strong blue tones in open shade on sunny days, color temperature 7000 K

  • Cloudy/Twilight/Sunset: for cloudy days, dusk and dawn, color temperature 6000 K

  • Tungsten: for incandescent illumination, color temperature 3200 K

  • White Fluorescent Light: eliminates typical green color casts, color temperature 4000 K

  • Flash: a starting point for studio strobes and Canon Speedlites, color temperature 6000 K

  • Custom: with custom white balance, you shoot a white object that will serve as the standard for the white balance, by selecting this image, you import its white balance data for the white balance setting, color temperature 2000-10000 K

  • Color Temperature: manually set color temperature from 2800-10000 K in 100 K increments

  • White Balance Correction: you can correct the standard color temperature for the white balance setting, has the same effect as using a color temperature conversion or a color compensating filter, each color can be corrected to one of nine levels

  • White Balance Auto Bracketing: with just one shot, three images having a different color tone can be recorded simultaneously, based on the current white balance mode's standard color temperature, the white balance setting can be changed from 0 to +/-3 stops in whole-stop increments

Color Space: The color space refers to the range of reproducible colors. With this camera, you can set the color space for captured images to sRGB or Adobe RGB. For normal images, sRGB is recommended. In the Basic Zone modes, sRGB will be set automatically.

Picture Style: By selecting a picture style you can achieve various effects. You can also adjust each preset to create custom settings.

  • Standard: image looks vivid, sharp, and crisp

  • Portrait: for nice skin tones, the image looks slightly sharp and crisp, color tone can be adjusted to change skin tone

  • Landscape: vivid blues and greens, very sharp and crisp image

  • Neutral: natural colors and subdued images, no sharpness applied

  • Faithful: when the subject is photographed under a color temperature of 5200 K, the color is adjusted colorimetrically to match the subject's color, no sharpness applied

  • Monochrome: black and white

  • Custom: starting with any of the presets above, you can create three custom picture style settings by changing the sharpness, contrast, color saturation, color tone, filter effect (monochrome), or color toning (monochrome)

Exposure Compensation: Exposure compensation is used to alter the camera's standard exposure setting. You can make the image look lighter (increased exposure) or darker (decreased exposure). The exposure compensation amount can be set up to +/-2 stops in 1/3-stop increments.

Auto Exposure Bracketing: With auto exposure bracketing (AEB), the camera automatically changes the exposure level up to +/-2 stops in 1/3-stop increments for three successive shots.

AE Lock: AE lock enables you to lock the exposure at a different place from the point of focus. After locking the exposure, you can recompose the shot while maintaining the desired exposure level. This feature is useful for backlit and spotlighted subjects.

Bulb Exposures: When bulb is set, the shutter is open during the time you keep pressing the shutter button fully. Bulb is useful when a long exposure is necessary for capturing night scenes, fireworks, the night sky, etc.

AF-Assist beam with the Built-in Flash: Under low-light conditions, the built-in flash fires a brief burst of flashes when you press the shutter button halfway. This is to illuminate the subject to enable easier autofocusing.

FE Lock: FE (flash exposure) lock obtains and locks the correct flash exposure reading for any part of a subject.

Metering Modes: You can select from the following metering modes:

  • Evaluative Metering: the camera's standard metering mode suited for most subjects even under backlit conditions, after detecting the main subject's position, brightness, background, front and back lighting conditions, etc, the camera sets the proper exposure
  • Partial Metering: effective when the background is much brighter than the subject due to backlighting, etc, uses approximately 9% of the frame at the center
  • Spot: for metering a specific part of the subject, uses approximately 3.5% of the frame at the center
  • Centerweighted Average Metering: metering is weighted at the center and then averaged for the entire scene

Continuous Shooting Mode: During continuous shooting mode, the camera stores approximately 5 images per second (high speed) or 3 images per second (low speed). The maximum burst during continuous recording depends on the image recording quality and memory space:

Note: The Auto Power Off function will not activate in Auto Playback Mode.

Direct Print Function: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a CP-series printer that supports the Direct Print function. You can also connect the camera directly to certain Canon Bubble Jet printers. In this way, you can make prints directly from the camera without connecting a computer.

PictBridge Printing Capability: Using the supplied USB cable, you can connect this camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer. PictBridge is a new standard that allows you to connect a PictBridge compliant camera directly to a PictBridge compliant printer and make prints, regardless of brand.

Exif Print (Exif 2.21): The Canon EOS 30D conforms to Exif Print, a worldwide standard. Vital camera settings (such as exposure mode, white balance, exposure time) and scene data are recorded to the image file when it is captured. Printers compatible with Exif Print are able to use this information to produce high quality photographs, exactly the way they were intended at the time of capture. This intelligent communication process also allows the printer to correct for poor lighting or mistakes, resulting in photos that can be even better than the originals.

DPOF Print Settings: On the CompactFlash Card, you can select which image or images you want to print and how many copies you want. This is convenient for printing images all at once, on optional Canon direct print function compliant printers, on PictBridge compliant printers, or at participating photo labs.
