Lanny McDonald (Denver Post file)

Lanny McDonald, a Canadian former hockey player who played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Rockies (now the New Jersey Devils) and Calgary Flames, spent 16 years in the pros, scoring 500 goals 1,006 points.

Although he s known primarily as a Calgary Flame — he was the first player in franchise history to have his jersey retired — he spent all of the 1980 season, as well as parts of both the 1979 and 1981 seasons, in Colorado. He was named the Rockies captain and scored 35 goals and 81 points in his lone full season.

McDonald retired in 1989 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1992. He s still revered as a legend in Calgary, and although his time in Colorado was short, few could ever forget his on-ice contributions and especially that stache.

In honor of Movember — and because we wanted to, really — we dug through the archives to find this classic photo of McDonald, big red mustache and all.
