The Museums of Kos Island

The Museums of Kos Island
The island of Kos has been continuously inhabited since the prehistoric era, and there are numerous archaeological remains to showcase the island’s rich history. The town of Kos is plentifully bestrewn with remains of immense importance from the early Hellenistic times to the post Roman era, whereas the heritage of the island as the birthplace of Hippokrates adds to its historical appeal.

The greatest findings from the town of Kos’ archaeological excavations, as well as from locations such as the Casa Romana, the Sancturary of Dionysos and the Odeon, are displayed in the Archaeological Museum of Kos, located in Eleftherias square in the center of the town. The museum was closed to the public due to renovations, and it only recently reopened its doors, welcoming visitors from all around the world to admire treasures such as the enormous sculpture of the goddess Hera’s (Juno) head or a lion shaped funerary repousse, as well as an imposing statue of Hippokrates, the father of modern medicine.

Another interesting museum in Kos island is the Folklore Museum in Kefalos, which depicts as accurately as possible the rustic everyday life at the beginning of the 18th century by an exhibition of authentic tools, artifacts and embroideries. In a similar manner, the Antimacheia Traditional House is a reconstructed typical house of the early 20th century, a display of common everyday life, as well as the traditional architecture of the time.

Finally, the cultural center “Ancient House-Hippokrates’ Garden” in Mastichari is a representation of a 5th century BC village Ancient Greek settlement, where you can participate in daily philosophical seminars, various classes and cultural happenings.
