Inspector Morse actor John Thaw has died of cancer aged 60.

He had been battling with cancer of the oesophagus for many months, but died at his Wiltshire home earlier this evening.

"John died with his family around him," said his wife, actress Sheila Hancock, in a statement. "We have all been so grateful for the thousands of letters and messages from people wishing him well.

"Everyone, including the media, has been wonderful during this difficult period. I would like them all to know how much their support and understanding has meant to him and to all of us."

First to pay tribute to the star, who was also famed for his role in The Sweeney, was ITV's Director of Channels David Liddement. "Throughout his distinguished career John understood the power of the small screen," he said. "He was the consummate television actor and caught the imagination of millions of viewers. He will be sorely missed. Our thoughts are with Sheila and his family."
