The battle to lead the graphics chip market intensified this week as ATI Technologies unveiled on Tuesday the Radeon X800 PRO and Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition for high-end gaming. ATI also introduced Ruby, a sexy secret agent and ATI's new mascot, to demonstrate the chips' ability to show lifelike characteristics. She is the company's marketing counterpart to market leader Nvidia's mermaid, Nalu. Nvidia's GEForce 6800 was launched a few weeks ago.

Motorola has agreed to distribute WorldGate Communications' new Ojo Personal Video Phone. The Ojo, which comes with a 7-inch screen, was unveiled on Monday at a cable industry conference in New Orleans. WorldGate says the phone transmits voice and video in real time at 30 frames per second. The video phone will be sold by major digital subscriber line providers this fall.

The National Basketball Association said Monday it will transmit highlights of the 2004 NBA playoffs via Nokia video-enabled handsets. Starting on June 6, the Nokia 6600 and 6620 handsets will be able to receive clips of the latest games.

Samsung said Thursday it has surpassed rival LG.Philips LCD in computer-display sales. Though LG.Philips has been the market leader in PC LCD monitors, Samsung edged the company out by $500 million in revenue in the first quarter of 2004.

The quality of camera phone images may soon improve thanks to new technology announced Tuesday by LightSurf Technologies. The startup's software keeps a database of all 450 camera-enabled handsets and PDAs, and makes corrections to camera phone images based on each device's known optical shortcomings. LightSurf hopes to sell the program to major wireless providers.
