8 Great '90s Looks From Reality Bites That We Still Want to Rock 20 Years Later

Hey '90s lovers, here's the best news we've heard all week: Reality Bites, one of the most seminal movies of the decade—all about Generation X 20-somethings navigating post-collegiate life—is coming back, this time as an NBC series! The film's director, Ben Stiller, and writer, Helen Childress, are teaming up on the TV show—he as co-producer, she as writer—which will be set in the '90s (yay!) with the same cast of characters, though, sadly, not starring Winona Ryder, Janeane Garofalo, Ethan Hawke, or Stiller himself. To celebrate, I wanted to take a look back at some of my favorite looks from the original 1994 movie—quintessentially easygoing, grunge-inspired and retro-y looks I obsessed over when I was in high school. Guess what: They still hold up really well today. Like, take Winona Ryder's cool-girl oversize tee-and-prepster sunglasses look, above—it's gorgeous and so easy to replicate—look for smaller-scale frames (so trendy in the late '80s and early '90s!) and a classic, tortoise silhouette and color way. I like these "Leonard" round frames from Illesteva ($165)—they're a timeless style. Janeane Garofalo's retro-inspired wardrobe in Reality Bites is also totally to die for—and you don't need to adopt the whole kit and kaboodle to

Janeane Garofalo's retro-inspired wardrobe in Reality Bites is also totally to die for—and you don't need to adopt the whole kit and kaboodle to get it right. These pastel sunglasses can work with any look this summer—it's the oval shape and low-fi frame that make them stand out. I found two similar styles that are available right now—these Balenciaga Vintage oval-frame sunglasses ($212) and these super-pretty purple pair from Steve Madden ($38).

It was a different time, the '90s—a time before fast fashion, bandage dresses everywhere, celebutantes, and the Kardashians. I remember, fondly, the days when wearing loose and comfortable clothes to hang out with a boy you liked wasn't interpreted as a failure in effort. Or maybe I was just naive? Ha ha. Here's Winona's plummy shirt-dress—it's so easygoing. Two available-now options I'm really into are the "Samantha" dress from Thomas Pink ($350) and this gorgeous plummy plus-size woven pique dress from Lands' End ($35).

The two things that no grunge-inspired wardrobe could do without in the early '90s: plaid flannel and florals of all varieties. Winona's sleeveless ditsy-print floral maxidress is gorgeous—here's similar one from Free People ($148)—and Janeane Garofalo's puff-sleeve minidress feels just as cool today as it did back then—check out the similar silhouette in this Dorothy Perkins black-and-white print dress ($35).

A crisp white top and black pants never really go out of style—but there's something that seems so, I don't know, modern about Winona Ryder's work outfit here, no? Here's a white button-up blouse from Express ($40) and smart, black work-worthy pants from Rachel Roy ($120) to pull off the same look today.

OK, I'm basically completely obsessed with Janeane Garofalo's Annie-inspired red dress here—it has the cutest white collar! Here's a very similar look—the "Looking for Tomorrow" dress from ModCloth ($53). Accessorize with celery if you must.

Sometimes, the only thing you want to wear in the world is your favorite boxy T-shirt. Oversize tees were a total thing in the '90s—let's bring the look back, shall we? No need to raid the men's department to get the perfect, slouchy fit—I'm in love with this super-soft cotton tee from TrueNYC ($42).

One more adorable Janeane Garofalo dress to throw in the mix here—a baby blue polka-dot button-up dress. For a 2013 take on this look, check out this Skies Are Blue polka-dot chambray dress ($45). Are you as obsessed with Janeane's bangs in this movie as I am?

Ooh, and just in case Reality Bites was before your time, here's the official 1994 trailer:

Are you as excited as I am that Reality Bites is coming back—nearly 20 years after it was first released!—as a television show? I hope it's good. In the meantime, let's reminisce about our favorite '90s looks in the comments section, below.
