Pierce Brosnan is an Irish actor who rose to fame in the 1990s and 2000s for his role as James Bond. He is also known for his memorable roles in films such as Mrs. Doubtfire, Dante’s Peak and The Thomas Crown Affair. Very popular in Hollywood, he is also the pride of the Irish, as Brosnan has never hidden his attachment to his native Ireland.
Pierce Brendan Brosnan was born on May 16, 1953 in Navan, County Meath, Ireland.
His parents are Thomas and Margaret Brosnan. He is the eldest of three siblings.
At the time, his father worked as a furniture salesman and his mother was a housewife. They often travel the world to sell their wares, leaving their children in the care of family and friends.
In fact, Brosnan grew up without parental supervision for long periods.
He spent his teenage years in England and Wales, where he studied drama at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
After a few years in the theater, he made his screen debut in 1979 in an episode of the British TV series The Sandbaggers.
Brosnan’s first two films, The Long Walk (1979) and The Mirror Crack’d (1980), were commercial flops, but he won critical acclaim for his performance in The Long Good Friday (1981).
The following year, he appeared in another critically acclaimed film, The General. His breakthrough as an actor came in 1987, when he starred in the film The Fourth Protocol. His performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy.
In 1989, he appeared in Mrs. Doubtfire, Dante’s Peak (1993) and The Thomas Crown Affair (1994), all of which made millions at the box office. This last film gave him the opportunity to team up with actress and producer Rene Russo, whom he married in 2002 and from whom he divorced in November 2006.
With his angelic face, Brosnan lands the role of British secret agent James Bond. It’s a crowning achievement for the Irish actor, who never ceases to turn heads!
He first played the role in 1995 in Golden Eye and went on to play it in 3 more films:
Although he’s been a fan of the Bond series since childhood, he never thought he’d one day play the iconic character. He had even turned down the role twice – once when Timothy Dalton left the series due to ill health, and again when Roger Moore left the role.
However, after a series of rejections, he was offered the role in 1995 and accepted. He played the role of 007 until 2002, when he became the actor who had appeared in the greatest number of Bond films in the history of the franchise.
Thanks to his role, Pierce Brosnan has become a household name the world over.
As well as being a commercial success, his four Bond films have won numerous awards and nominations, including a Golden Globe for Best Actor in 2002 for his role in Die Another Day, and a People’s Choice Award for Favorite Film Actor in 2003 for The World Is Not Enough.
In addition to his role as James Bond, Pierce Brosnan has appeared in a number of notable films and TV series over the course of his career. After landing the role of Bond, he was offered several roles in films such as The Thomas Crown Affair, Dante’s Woodpecker and The Mirror Has Two Faces.
He has also appeared in films such as Evelyn, The Panama Tailor, The Laws of Attraction, After Sunset, The Greatest Game Ever Played, The Grey Man, The Matador and The Love Token.
Brosnan’s work as an actor has often been overshadowed by his commitment to humanitarian causes.
A long-time supporter of Greenpeace, he has been a member of the organization since 2001. He campaigned for them by taking part in public events and rallies, including one in Paris that turned violent in 2001.
He was also one of the celebrities who signed a petition urging the US government to extend the Kyoto Protocol.
