Club Scene: Otep headlines heavy-metal show at Ground Zero

Female-fronted outfit Otep has been churning out blistering heavy metal interspersed with catchy hooks for nearly a decade. Last summer, the band released its latest album, "Smash the Control Machine," which is highlighted by its politically charged title track. Otep brings its hard-hitting style to Ground Zero on Wednesday, headlining a bill that also includes Bury Your Dead, Through the Eyes of the Dead, Destrophy, Chivalry, Nefarious and X Mas. Western North Carolina-based singer-songwriter Dave Desmelik writes high-quality folk songs filled with introspective lyrics, but what really makes him shine is his instrumental prowess. A highly skilled guitarist and banjoist, Desmelik plays with authority that grabs even the most casual listener's full attention. Having recently released his sixth solo album, "Onlooker," Desmelik takes the stage at Sonny's Brick Oven Pizza on Sunday as the featured artist at the weekly songwriters showcase that also includes an open mic. Since their formation in 2002, the Bushy Valley Boys have staked a reputation as one of the Upstate's leading purveyors of traditional bluegrass and old-time mountain music. The Spartanburg-based band delights acoustic music lovers with exquisite picking and solid singing. The Bushy Valley Boys perform Friday at the Nu-Way Restaurant and Lounge. Following a radio performance at 4 p.m. today on WNCW (88.7 FM), The Watts will return to The Cellar Club on Friday. Not only will the band serve up a broad mix of longtime fan favorites, but it will also sprinkle in a smattering of new compositions, which include a reggae-infused original called "The Great By and By." Known for their blues-flavored brand of rock 'n' roll and power pop, The Watts have been on the area music scene for the past three-and-a-half years. Showtime is 9 p.m. Call 699-9730.
