The late Benny Hill was a popular comedian and actor, best remembered for his television programme The Benny Hill show.

Southampton-born Benny HIll is one of the most famous comedians from Hampshire, but is at risk of being forgotten by the younger generations.

I'm 23 and I don't think I know who Benny Hill is, nor have I ever seen an episode of his programme.

Back in the day, The Benny Hill Show was among the most-watched programmes in the UK with the audience peaking at more than 21 million in 1971.

The show aired from January 1955 until May 1989 and was shown in over 140 countries.

While The Benny Hill Show was incredibly popular, the fact I've never heard of him suggests the programme hasn't been able to convince modern audiences.

I decided to see if I could find any episodes to watch for myself - and see why it was so popular back in the day.

I found some clips on YouTube and pressed play.

Here's my judgement: I can see why it was funny in the 70s, but Benny Hill struggled to get a few laughs from me. The show has not aged well at all.

The sexism was too distracting and the miming and slapstick comedy just made me cringe.

In one scene, a young female nurse leaves her elderly female patient for the company of an attractive man.

After several minutes of ridiculous miming, the old woman flies over a cliff, only to be rescued by two chuckle brother impersonators.

Somehow this skit only got worse, and continued to make no sense.

The old lady, still being carried by the chuckle brothers on the stretcher, begins to pinch the bums of every man that she passes.

Considering the awareness we now have about consent and sexual assault, this scene has not aged well and it is not funny, despite the roaring laughter from the audience.

I somehow continued watching in hope that I would laugh or find something remotely funny.

Cue the next scene, Benny Hill himself dressed as a bird talking to a caged pet bird, or should I say a woman dressed as a pet bird.

No more mine, instead dialogue to make the audience laugh. Oh how I wished for the miming to return.

The last thing I wanted to see was two grown adults play out a sketch, with many sexual references, dressed as birds.

I know we all spent weeks watching The Masked Singer but the bird scene was just weird and it was the end of Benny Hill for me.

While I struggled to find the comedy, it is a product of the time it was made and of course, people still find the programme funny, and may even feel nostalgic towards it.

This type of show just isn't being made anymore and I can understand why, the slapstick and miming just doesn't translate to a modern audience.

I think it is safe to say I won't be returning to watch any more episodes from the Southampton funnyman anytime soon.
