At the Academy Awards, 12 Years a Slave may have been the winning drama of the night, but the gorgeous feline liner seen on Penelope Cruz and Olivia Wilde provided a showstopping beauty moment worthy of its own recognition. Makeup artist Melanie Inglessis, who did Wilde’s makeup, said she was going for a classic French look with the sharp cat eye. “I first used Revlon ColorStay eyeliner pencil to outline the cat eye and really sharpen the look. I then put Revlon ColorStay liquid liner in blackest black directly on top,” said the pro. She flicked the wing up at the end. “I went back with a Q-tip to sharpen the edges and really make the cat eye pop. I created a very precise eye that makes a statement but still works well with fresh skin and light peach lips,” says Inglessis.

Makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury looked to old Hollywood to create Cruz’s glam look: “We were inspired by Sophia Loren and Audrey Hepburn, so I gave her really sculpted cheekbones, defined brows and a very sultry Dolce Vita eye,” Tilbury told Pret-a-Reporter. To “exaggerate her incredible almond-shaped eyes and make them the main focus of the look,” Tilbury used a black Kohl eyeliner on the upper and lower lash lines, dragging it up and out into the feline flick at the end. For added intensity, she lined the inner eye rim with black liner as well.
And the award for best cat eye goes to: Cruz, for the intense look worthy of the Oscars. This is Hollywood’s most glam night, after all.
