Trunk covered with persistent leaf sheaths. "shuttle-cock" appearance of crown. Leaves very long to 20 m. Leaflets with small spines along margins and midrib. Massive inflorescence and infrutescences to 3 m. Scaly fruit.

Moist situations (swamps, stream banks) near human habitations; 50-1000 m.
