Kohaku Koi Swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri) An aquarium hobby classic, the swordtail is a livebearing species found through parts of Central America but it has been bred worldwide for the aquarium hobby for decades. In that time, the wild form has been developed in to dozens of varieties and color forms, including the popular red brick, tuxedo, pineapple, and many more. The Kohaku Koi Swordtail is distinguished by its vivid red and white coloration and deep red eyes. A peaceful, hardy, and active fish, they are often recommended for beginners due to their ease of care. Male swordtails display the prominent lower tail fin extension that the species is named for, and females tend to be larger and more heavy bodied. #aquarium #freshwaterfish #swordtailfish

The cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) The cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is a freshwater fish of the family Characidae of order Characiformes. It is native to the upper Orinoco and Negro Rivers in South America. Growing to about 3 cm (1.2 in) total length, the cardinal tetra has the striking iridescent blue line characteristic of the genus Paracheirodon laterally bisecting the fish, with the body below this line being vivid red in color, hence the name "cardinal tetra". The cardinal tetra's appearance is similar to that of the closely related neon tetra, with which it is often confused; the neon's red coloration extends only about halfway to the nose, and the neon's blue stripe is a less vibrant blue. The cardinal tetra is a very popular aquarium fish, but is less widespread than the neon tetra because until recently, it was difficult to breed in captivity. However, many breeders are now producing the fish. #aquarium #ornamentalfish #livetropicalfish 😍

Tesselata Moray (Gymnothorax favagineus). 🐠 🐟 🐍 🐡 The laced moray (Gymnothorax favagineus), also known as the leopard moray, leopard moray eel, tessellate moray or honeycomb moray, is a species of marine fish in the family Muraenidae. Gymnothorax favagineus is a large moray which can reach a maximum length of 300 cm, but specimens usually encountered are much smaller. Its serpentine in shape body has a white to yellowish background color dotted with numerous black spots which latter vary in size and shape depending on the individual and on the environment in which the animals live. Can Fish Blink Their Eyes? Did you know that this fish can blink its eyes? Meet the common mudskipper, a fascinating creature that's evolved this unique ability. Keeping mudskippers isn't your typical fish-in-a-tank scenario. It's more about maintaining a vivarium with muddy ground for their burrows, and ensuring the mud stays just right - porous and wet, but not stinky. These fish love lounging half-submerged, eyes peeking above and below the water. Add some plants and rocks for them to escape the mud occasionally, and you've got a captivating, albeit challenging, aquarium setup. Share this video if you found the mudskipper's unique lifestyle fascinating! #MudskipperCare #AquariumMaintenance #UniqueFishSpecies

A study in Journal of Zoo Aquarium Research looked into sunbeetle enclosure use and how it was affected by basking light provision: ✔️Uneven use of the enclosure, with preference for elevated branches. ✔️Basking light was significant predictor of zone use in 3 out of 5 zones. ✔️Elevated climbing areas and basking lights should be incorporated in sunbeetle enclosures. ✔️Applications to husbandry and management of widely kept but understudied species. --- Read paper (open access): https://lnkd.in/dJQB5RVA --- #ZooResearch #SunBeetle #AnimalBehaviour
