I look forward to speaking at the 2nd ICCEPM International Seminar (“Blockchain for Construction”) chaired by Dr. Bonsang Koo and organized by the Korean Institute of Construction Engineering and Management on Sept 9th, 2021 (6PM Pacific Time). Attendance is FREE with pre-registration: https://lnkd.in/gZnZ99tJ I will share my work with Dr. Martin Fischer at the Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE) on the application of blockchain and smart contracts for enhancing the integration and visibility of construction supply chain. The presentation is followed by Q&A and a panel discussion.

I’m humbled to hear one of my doctoral works with Martin Fischer at Stanford University has received the 2022 Best Paper Award by ASCE. This piece heavily weaves in concepts from philosophy (scholarly work by John Searle) into engineering and computer science to explore the ‘why’ of Blockchain and Smart Contracts for construction payments. Given the heavy dose of philosophy, I initially had doubts about sharing the work with the engineering community, and of course it was Martin that empowered me to write the piece. When seeing my reservations, he said to me (what I’d never forget) that I’m pursuing a doctor of “philosophy” degree after all, and it’s ok if I “philosophize” a bit :) That was the unlock! I exercised utmost freedom in writing this one, and I’m glad it was well received. https://lnkd.in/g7djCZqw

My doctoral work with Martin Fischer at Stanford featured in the cover article for the latest issue of the Informed Infrastructure magazine. In an interview with IFM, Martin and I share our perspectives on the current and future state of reality capture in construction and engineering industry. "In one incredible mashup of recap, robotics, AI and blockchain technology, Stanford’s Fischer and Hamledari, along with their industry colleagues, used lidar-equipped unmanned ground vehicles and camera-equipped aerial drones to automatically scan a project site, document and verify construction progress, and, using a blockchain-enabled smart contract, automatically issue conditional lien waivers from the contractor to the owner and issue payments from the owner to the subcontractors. Hamledari sees the future of recap developing in three areas: ...."

Free access to what is my very last academic work (link active for 50 days) Despite their potential, blockchain and smart contracts are some of the most overhyped, overpromised, and misunderstood technologies, and there is little data supporting their effectiveness outside Fintech. Our newly published paper addresses this gap. In this work, Martin Fischer and I discuss the impact of blockchain-enabled smart contracts on the visibility of construction supply chain and in a case study of construction payments. The insights help engineering and construction firms identify the right opportunities for adoption based on their business needs, the availability and quality of their data, and the granularity and the nature of their information needs.
