The game is played from either a third-person or first-person perspective. In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island where they scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill other players while avoiding getting killed themselves. The available safe area of the game's map decreases in size over time, directing surviving players into an ever tightening space to force encounters. The last surviving player (or team) wins the round. It was first released for Windows via Steam's early access beta program in March 2017, with a full release in December 2017. The game was also released by Microsoft Studios for the Xbox One via its Xbox Game Preview program that same month, and officially released in September 2018. PUBG Mobile, a free-to-play mobile game version for Android and iOS, was released in 2018, in addition to a port for the PlayStation 4. A version for the Stadia streaming platform was released in April 2020, with Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 versions being released in November 2020. This week, Microsoft announced it is bringing four of its internally developed, exclusive video games to competing platforms. While it is not the first time this happens, it's noteworthy nonetheless because platform companies tend to use 'first-party' releases to boost the appeal of their own platforms (#Xbox in this case). Of the four games coming to other platforms, the one that makes most sense to me is #SeaofThieves (developed by Rare Ltd, published by Xbox Game Studios Publishing). Sea of Thieves is an action-adventure game that relies heavily on online multi-player functionality. The pirate-themed video game is set in a sh-arrr-ed world, where groups of players encounter each other in their adventures. Last year, when I was looking into the likelihood of Microsoft taking #CallofDuty games exclusive following its acquisition of Activision Blizzard, I developed a model suggesting that the most likely games to be taken exclusive are predominantly single-player games based on novel intellectual property (#IP), whereas the least likely #videogames to be taken/kept exclusive are predominantly multi-player games based on established IP. To me it was always unlikely #CoD would go exclusive. And while Sea of Thieves is a new IP, it has been out for nearly six years now making the IP more established. In many ways, this echoes what Microsoft did with #Minecraft after it's acquisition of Mojang Studios (Minecraft's developer). Online multiplayer games require scale and critical mass whereas new IPs need to be nurtured and typically have smaller followings (to begin with). Releasing select internal games on platforms such as Sony's #PlayStation and Nintendo #Switch fits Microsoft's platform strategy where the focus is increasingly on (digital) distribution rather than hardware. Furthermore, Xbox is trailing in terms of its hardware installed base in the current generation. As such, Microsoft is likely focusing on maximizing consumer spend (and engagement) on gaming content rather than growing its hardware base.

Xbox Game Camp Sweden is coming to an end. It has been an extraordinary experience, and I've learned SO MUCH over the last ten weeks. Next week we will do our pitch to Xbox, and the project will be over. I haven't really shared that much about the game, and I thought it might be time to share something about it now. So here's the very first screenshot from the game! At this point, the demo has a number of NPCs to interact with and two questlines to follow in order to finish the story. We also have a lot of wonderful music and SFX, and a ton of dialogue. On top of that there are much more cool assets and stuff than what's being shown in this picture. There's an inventory system, branching / context sensitive dialogue, a few ways to finish the quests, and more. Also, bugs. Of course. If everything goes as planned, there will be a playable demo of the game out later today or tomorrow. My first impressions of the #PlaystationPortal for my #PS5? Great! More detailed feedback to come tomorrow or so! I definitely can see the appeal as a family father, such as: - Family (the kids, lol) want to watch some show or movie on TV but I want to play games. - The kiddo (6 y/o) wants to play, but I want to watch something on TV (or have him hunker down in his room but he wants to play PS5) - You enjoy having a big screen to play on versus your mobile phone for remote play. - You don't want to drain your mobile device for remote play or you want yourself (or the kid) to just be able to play PS5 *OR* use the linked media accounts - yes you still can watch Crunchyroll, Netflix, Disney+, etc. on the Playstation portal just as much as if it were running on the PS5 ;) All in all, for $200 I see it a worthy investment, *IF* you have to share the dedicated TV. My main recommendation is to not play online games - but more on that tomorrow. My only multiplayer game test was Rocket League and the latency input was just too much, plus the lower framerate compared to my 120hz TV completely threw me out of my rhythm and comfort zone.

Origin is a digital distribution platform developed by Electronic Arts for purchasing and playing video games. In October 2022, Origin ceased operations for its Windows platform, directing players to the EA app. The Mac and mobile versions remain online. Origin contained social features such as profile management, networking with friends with chat and direct game joining along with an in-game overlay, streaming via Twitch and sharing of game library and community integration with networking sites like Facebook, Xbox Live, PlayStation Network, Nintendo Network, and Nintendo Account. 'Convergence: A League of Legends Story' will arrive on May 23rd. The next League of Legends spin-off game is only a few weeks away. Convergence: A League of Legends Story is coming to Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4 and PC (on Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store) on May 23rd.Convergence is a 2D action platformer from Double Stallion Games (the studio behind Speed Brawl) and Riot's publishing label Riot Forge. You'll play as Ekko, a popular LoL champion who featured in the Arcane animated series and can manipulate time, as you navigate a more colorful version of Zaun than you may be used to. There's a promise of "tight, dynamic combat," while Ekko’s ability to travel through time and space should open up some intriguing exploration.We got our first look at Convergence back in 2019, so it's taken quite some time for Double Stallion to finish it up (there was, of course, the small matter of a pandemic since then). Xbox historically hasn't had a huge amount of Japanese exclusives, but Phil Spencer says you can "count on" more down the road. These days, most third party developers do release their games across both platforms, but Square Enix does still tend to release some of its bigger games on PlayStation long before anywhere else. But in a recent interview with Game Watch, Spencer was asked if there are any plans to publish any more big-budget Japanese games, with the Xbox 360's Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey used as examples. "You can count on it," Spencer replied, using January's Hi-Fi Rush as a recent example of an Xbox-published game made by a Japanese developer. "Japanese creators are also part of Microsoft Game Studios and although there are some titles that cannot be announced yet, we are working with Japanese teams to develop new games.
