EVP, UPM Plywood

Today was a very inspiring Luncheon with Prime Minister of the Rebublic of Estonia, Mrs. Kaja Kallas and Ambassador, Mr Sven Sakkov with some 20 business leaders and stakeholders mentioned in Pilvi Hämäläinen’s post below. Discussions and updates from Estonian & Finnish co-operation were lively and very supportive. We in UPM Plywood have run our Otepää plywood mill already 23 years successfully. Both mill and it’s employees have done very well recently. As we have invested to Otepää mill some 60 M€ in past 10 years, its very important to have good predictability and other long term business continuity rationale in place also for the future. My main question and talking point to Prime Minister was the general acceptance to utilize forest assets sustainably in long term in Estonia. This is very important topic once we are validating and justifying next investments. We in UPM are creating a future beyond fossils and plywood made in Otepää is just an one prime example of it. Our Plywood is in ratio 5:1 net CO2 positive, ie. it’s acting as an Co2 storage 5 times more than emissions are created during production. Within next 2-3 years we can get totally rid-off Scope 1 and 2 emissions in UPM Plywood. We plant 55 million trees every year, almost 100 per 1 minute. Much more than we use.   Big thanks having an opportunity to discuss this topics today. Discussions continues in December as I will meet other Ministers, Head of RMK, EMPL, Heads of Environment Agency and Private Forest Association etc. Stakeholders in Tallinn.
