Suomussalmi - Pearl of Artic Lakeland of Finland

Suomussalmi - Pearl of Artic Lakeland of Finland

Suomussalmi locates in Kainuu Region, what we call nowaday Arctic Lakeland region because it is located as nothermost point of Finnish Lakeland district and it is almost a gate to Lappish sceneries and very close to Russian border. Kainuu Region and Suomussalmi is known already for Finnish travellers with its' 800 000 bednights annually but not yet for so many foreigners with little bit over 100 000 bednights. Still the area provides full infrastructure to pamper visitor wherever he or she is coming from.

"Suomussalmi invites you to be enchanted by the splendour and beauty of our numerous lakes, forests and eskers. Here you can relish the peace and quiet of nature, embracing the sound of silence, while at the same time being acutely aware of the strange and different noises emanating from nearby forest animals. Let the warmth of the majestic Nordic taiga, coniferous forest zone embrace you. Watching the banter of bear cubs frolicking on the shore is sure to melt the heart of even the most cynical person. Sunset in the magical canyon of Julma-Ölkky entices visitors to come back again and again. In Suomussalmi you can meet the impressive “Silent People”, hear the “Musical Forest” (Soiva Metsä), and be impressed by the powerful war events that have taken place in the area. Suomussalmi is situated nearby of Ruka-Kuusamo." says Tourism Manager of Suomussalmi, Ms. Aija Laukkanen.
