UAV mapping of Laukaa, Finland

National Land Survey of Finland (MML) did order mapping of center of Laukaa from Hytola Engineering Oy. 8 ground control points were measured and marked with signals. Over 2900 20Mpix aerial images were taken with UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, UAS, RPAS). Flight time was less than 4 hours. Area mapped was 1.9 km2 and average ground sampling distance was 3.1 cm. From images Hytola Engineering did produce Orthomosaic and 3D point cloud with 280 million points. Technology is fast, accurate and very cost effective.

In this case data will be used in community planning and evaluation of infrastructure. In general this technology may be used in digitizing real world. From 3D point cloud it is possible to measure distances, areas and volumes. Elevation models, evaluation of resources, inspecting changes in landscape, documentation of construction sites, inspecting and measuring bridges and other infrastructure... there are lots of uses for UAV mapping.
