Recently got 5 wild caught Rio Caete Geos from a friend. He told me they were max size at 5 inches. Am I able to keep them in a 40 breeder for life? Is this a rare species? I cannot find any information online.

Kind of a low profile geo, not very well known, especially compared to popular geos like sveni, pyrocephalus, winemilleri, and altifrons. I see them occasionally posted in a fb geo group, but typically just photos without much detail about them, so I don't know about their temperament or keeping a group in a smaller tank-- they're probably small enough to keep a pair in a 40, but I'd prefer a larger tank for a group. About the best real world information I've seen on them is here.

I kept a group from TUIC in a 75.. Seemed they needed more space as they grew.. More active than all other geos I've kept, even pyrocephalus.. may be from faster flowing waters.. I ultimately rehomed them to focus the 75 on Discus, but I'd get them again if I had a 5 or 6 foot tank for them to have room to swim..

I agree with the above, these Geos will eventually outgrow a tiny tank like a 40, (even if they only reach 5' they've outgrown it) and need soft water, and a higher current.

What’s the scientific name? Or are they a new and unclassified?

40br is far too small for any length of time, especially if you get a breeding pair!

thanks for the response guys I will move them to my 150 gallon soon. But if they pair up am I able to keep a pair in a 40 gallon? I like using smaller tanks for breeding.
