In 1968, Mr. Murphy joined the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, an Irish social and charitable organization. He served as the state president of the group from 1979 to 1983. In the 1980s, he lobbied the Detroit City Council and the state to adopt the MacBride Principles of Fair Employment, which prohibited employment discrimination against Catholics in Northern Ireland. In 1988, Gov.

James Blan-charc signed into law a bill that required the state to use the voting power of its pension funds to encourage U.S. companies operating in Northern Ireland to adopt the MacBride Principles. Mr. Murphy's first wife, Margaret, died in 1975. His son said a "strong spiritual background and faith" enabled Mr.

Murphy to get through the sad time. Mr. Murphy remarried in 1979. His second wife, Delia Mullen, died in March. During his retirement, Mr.

Murphy visited sick friends and brought them communion, his son said. "He was a very holy person; very committed to others," he said. Mr. Murphy is also survived by sons Brian and Paul Murphy; a daughter, Margaret Mary Mo-delski; 11 stepchildren; 29 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m.

Murphy had been battling prostate cancer for several years. On Friday, Mr. Murphy died at his Livonia home. He was 77. Mr.

Murphy was born and raised in Detroit. He attended St. Leo's grade school and Sacred Heart Seminary for high school and college. He decided not to enter the priesthood and left the seminary to begin a lifelong career in tire sales. He worked for a small Detroit tire dealer before joining Goodyear in 1970.

He retired in 1987. The Murphys lived on Detroit's west side before moving to Livonia, and Mr. Murphy was involved in his five children's lives, his son said. Mr. Murphy was active in the Catholic Central High School Dad's Club and was president KUKLA Church in Stud way Lake, Rev.

Throughout high school, college, and even medical school, he was promptly at the market by 4 a.m. with his father.

He enrolled in what is now Wayne State and received his bachelor's degree in science.
